AP Biology Introduction and Summary
AP Biology is among the most popular advanced placement tests put forth by College Board each year for high school students. The test was designed to challenge and motivate students to further expand on their passion for the subject of biological sciences.
AP Biology Course Goals
According to College Board, the structure for designing a proper AP Biology course should focus on the following topics:
- Molecules and Cells: 25%
- Heredity and Evolution: 25%
- Organisms and Populations: 50%

AP Biology Exam
The AP Biology Exam (Advanced Placement) is one of more than 30 tests currently being administered by College Board, a non-profit membership organization. High school students who take the AP Biology test have the opportunity to be graded on a college level for their exam scores. The AP Biology course should be comparable to an introductory biology course that students of that major will take in their first year of college as a Bio major.
Requirements for enrollment in a distinguished AP Biology course will be dependent on each school, but successful students should be able to demonstrate several in-depth concepts of biological science through a series of multiple choice questions, essays and a lab.
Grading
The AP Bio Exam is graded based on answers in two sections:
- Section I: 100 multiple choice questions (1 hour and 20 minutes)
- Section II: 4 free response essay questions (1 hour and 30 minutes)
Students will be given a composite score of based on their combined results from both sections.
