Workhouses
In 1834 the Poor Law Amendment Law was carried out to try and solve the issue of poverty and corrupt behaviour. The workhouses were designed to judge people and be terrifying so people would not want to go there. The idea was that the poor were helped to support themselves. They were housed in workhouses, clothed, fed, and given free education and medical care in return for working several hours a day.
