AN INSPECTOR CALLS

MR JOHNSON’S
EXAM REVISION
BOOKLET

HOW SHOULD I REVISE?

1. Firstly, you need to look at some past exam questions so you know what to expect – see pages 3 and 4. Do this now. Once completed put a tick next to this first step.

2. OK, now that you’ve done that you need to understand what to write and how to write it. You’ll find all of this information on page 4 and 5. Read and digest this information now. Once completed put a tick next to this second step.

3. Okey dokey. Now you need to refamiliarise yourself with the playwright, the play, its characters, themes, etc. Read pages 5 – 12. Don’t forget all the class notes & discussions! Once completed put a tick next to this third step. Happy reading.

4. Alrighty, now for the most important part of your revision. Create a mindmap (preferably on A3) with a few quotes (with page numbers) for each character as well as how these quotes link to what it shows about the characters, Priestley’s ideas, effect on audience(s), devices used, etc. Use colour and images to bring it alive; your brain likes colour and images. Tick the box when done.

5. Practise answering some of the exam questions under timed conditions – 45 minutes. Although we’ll do one in class, the more you do, the better you’ll get. Hand to me for marking/feedback.

6. As you approach the exam look at your mindmap, ensure you know where to find your evidence and reread this booklet.

Put in the time and it’ll pay off, I promise.

Good luck Year 11.

Inspector Goole and Mr Birling are two of the main characters and have perhaps the most noticeably opposing views of any two characters in the play. Priestley displays this through the constant conflict between the pair, and notably in their vastly contrasting speeches delivered separately in the play. In addition to the subtle details of their opposing views, this conflict successfully shows the contrasting diffenences between Birling and the Inspector in both how they look, how they are viewed and how they act.…

Staging devices such as lighting, narration, dance sequences, sound effects, stage props and music are intended to serve a specific purpose in a play. A staging device is usually intended to enhance the play's central message or to create the desired mood and atmosphere. In An Inspector Calls, Inspector Goole's role is central to the play's message of social responsibility. It is through the Inspector's meetings with the Birling family and Gerald Croft that each character is made aware of his or her selfish and uncaring attitude towards the less fortunate in society. In this sense, Inspector Goole is a staging device but he exceeds the expectations of such a role and it would be unfair to call him 'just' a staging device.…

When the Inspector Goole first enters the scene, Mr. Birling is giving some ‘good advice’, as he calls it, “A man has to make his own way – has to look after himself…The way some of these cranks talk and write now, you’d think everybody has look after everybody else, as if we’re all mixed up together”. Collectively, the Birlings had been celebrating, rather decadently, a celebration of Gerald and Sheila’s engagement and Mr. Birling had also been talking about there being a good chance that he will be in the next honours list.…
