The paper must be submitted through the Canvas site. Your 80 year old great aunt Evelyn was placing a canning jar on the top shelf when she stepped awkwardly off of the stool and twisted her leg at the hip. After collapsing to the floor, she found that she could no longer stand. She was taken to the emergency room where X rays revealed that the neck of her femur was fractured. A bone scan revealed reduced bone mass in the head and neck regions of the injured femur, in other long bones of the body and in the vertebrae, suggestive of osteoporosis. Surgery was required to repair the femur, and a biopsy of the bone tissue revealed that the composition of the osteoid is normal. Healing of the fracture is proceeding slowly.

1. Identify and describe the cells and functions of the cells of bone tissue.

2. What age related changes occur in the activities of the bone cells identified in question #1.

3. What type of bone is found in the head of the femur? What type of bone predominates in the diaphysis of the femur?

4. Compare and contrast the two types of bone you listed in answer to question number 3.

5. Which type of bone is primarily affected in osteoporosis?

6. The radiologist reported signs of osteoporosis. Describe the characteristics of an osteoporotic femur as seen on an X-ray. (How does it differ in appearance from a normal femur?)

7. You are not sure whether your aunt has Paget’s disease (osteitis deformans) or osteoporosis. How

Your 80 year-old great aunt, Persis, was placing a canning jar on the top shelf of her pantry when she stepped awkwardly off the stool and twisted her leg at the hip. She felt a sharp pain in her hip and, after collapsing to the floor, found she could no longer stand. She was taken to the emergency room where an X ray showed that the neck of her femur was fractured. More detailed X ray images revealed reduced bone mass in the head and neck regions of the injured femur, in the ends of other long bones of the body and in the vertebrae. Surgery was necessary to repair the fractured femur and a biopsy of the bone tissue indicated that the composition of the osteoid was normal. Healing of the fractured femur is proceeding slowly.…

The skeletal framework of the body is composed of at least 206 bones and the associated tendons, ligaments, and cartilages. The skeletal system has a variety of important functions, including, the support of soft tissues, blood cell production, mineral/electrolyte and lipid storage, and, through its relationships with the muscular system, the support and movement of the body as a whole. Skeletal system disorders can thus affect many other systems. The skeletal system is in turn influenced by the activities of other systems. For example, weakness or paralysis of skeletal muscles will lead to a weakening of the associated bones and may cause changes in their relative positions.…

    1. The skeleton is a metabolically active organ that undergoes continuous remodeling throughout life. Bone remodeling involves the removal of mineralized bone by osteoclasts followed by formation of bone matrix through the osteoblasts that subsequently become mineralized. The remodeling cycle consists of three constructive phases resorption, during which osteoclasts digest bone; reversal, when mononuclear cells appear on bone surface; and formation, when osteoclasts lay down new bone until the reabsorbed bone is completely replaced. Bone remodeling serves to adjust bone architecture to meet changing mechanical needs and helps to repair micro damages in bone matrix preventing the accumulation of old bone. It also plays an important role in maintaining plasma calcium homeostasis.…

For this assignment we are looking at the skeletal system. The skeleton is the internal framework of our body. It is made up of three things; bones, cartilage and joints. Without these three things we would just be a heap of skin, muscle and internal organs. The skeleton is made up of 206 bones that are separated into two groups. Firstly, the Axial Skeleton. The Axial skeleton is made up of 80 different bones whereas the Appendicular skeleton is made up of 126 bones.…
