The Impact of Human Expression on Culture

CE410 - Unit 7 Assignment
June 2, 2014

Introduction
“In minor ways we differ, in major we 're the same… I note the obvious differences between each sort and type, but we are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike—Maya Angelou” (all poetry, n. d.).
Because I was influenced by the many flavors of my ethnicity; African American, European American and Indian American, my cultural experiences were varied and unique. There was a meshing, of sorts, yet none completely dominated, or overwhelmed the other.
This however was a curse and a blessing. Juxtaposed to my blackness, my peers perceived me as white acting, thus labeling me a traitor of my African American heritage. In spite of this, by exposing me to the best of all worlds and beyond, my parents were instrumental in helping me view others—the human family—untainted by ignorance.
Personal Reflection (Part I)
Culture as it is defined by (Henslin, 2010) encompasses all that we are culturally, ethnically, and linguistically—“the language, beliefs, values, norms, behaviors, and even material objects that characterizes a group and are passed from one generation to the next.” However, we are not so totally encapsulated culturally that we cannot reach beyond the familiar and dare to explore and appreciated the “minor differences” of others.
My interactions with my White, Greek, German, Spanish, Asian, and Pakistani friends has created a tightly woven tapestry of our collective commonality—family—shared and celebrated through rich folklore of art, music and dance. Hence, not only is my creativity enhanced through these gatherings, but my humanism is enhanced as well. And this is what I bring to my experiences with the children I have the privilege of serving.

1. How can you make sure the young children you work with remain connected to their own culture?
2. What creative opportunities can you provide for young children to assure they can participate in your program as well as develop an understanding of the cultures of those in their class?
3. How will you involve families to support your effort in the classroom as well as in the home?

Strategies for the Creative Arts (Part II)

This section will highlight three specific activities, one each for art, music, and dance. You will write a paragraph about a developmentally appropriate activity which best represents the inclusion of artistic expression for a mixed age, culturally diverse population. First, write a paragraph about an appropriate art activity using the guidelines listed here.
Use essay style (do NOT write a lesson plan) to briefly describe the activity.
Include an explanation of how it will meet children’s developmental needs, abilities, and interest levels.
Explain the pedagogical significance of the activity.
Use a minimum of two sources to strengthen your paragraph as you apply research to what you have learned.
After completing your paragraph on the art activity, follow the same guidelines above to create the music and dance paragraphs.
All three activities should focus on the opportunity for children to explore and express themselves and NOT on activities which are highly teacher-directed with expected final results.

Conclusion

Share concluding thoughts in a final paragraph for this project.

Despite the more obvious physical differences we share amongst society, it is often our use of language that separates us from each other. Our language can reveal many things about our identity and can disclose such aspects as our nationality, culture, age, gender and even our level of education. Often our nationality can become explicit through our accent but also through our lexical choices in which we choose to use and it may even become evident that English is not our primary language and that that we have actually grew up in another country and have spoken a different language in our past. Our cultural heritage is a defining feature of our identity, contributing to how we see ourselves and how the groups we belong to identify us.…
