College
Quallan Phillips
Period 6
Dear Barbara I. Dewey, * Introduction: My name is Quallan Phillips. I’m currently a sophomore at East, applying for your college. Penn State University is a college I have always wanted to attend. Everything about it has inspired me to do well in life. The type of culture around the college is just mind blowing.

* Academic Work: I’m achieving very good grades except for my meteorology. It’s a subject that I’m very new to and something that is actually very hard for me. I understand the material of the work I just have a hard time putting it down on my homework or test. I took that class so I can have a challenge in school. Yes indeed, it’s giving me a work out, but in the end I know it will be all worth it because I would have passed that class. Not with a D or a C passing it with a B or an A. Other than that class, I’m enjoying every single bit of all my other classes. I’m currently passing them with an A or B. I’m very well satisfied.

* Extracurricular Activities: I’m enrolled into JROTC, which I’m highly in love with. I’m glad to know that your university has an ROTC program and that’s one of the reasons I’m highly interested. My father was a Sergeant Major in the United States Marine Corps and I’m just following in his footsteps. I’m very well known around my school just from JROTC. As a sophomore, I’m already a 1st LT with 23 ribbons and 15 arc pins. Freshmen look up to me, as I’ve been told. I’ve learned a lot in just one in the JROTC program. Self-discipline is now a key factor in my life and I look up to it every single day.

* Community Services: I’m very well known in our community, not for bad reason just for remarkable things. I have about 200 hours of volunteer time worked in the community. I’ve built a great relationship with the elderly and they really appreciate me and I appreciate them as well. I am than respectful to them and they don’t worry about anything whenever I’m hosting an event.

I would like to begin by saying that I am honored to be a nominee for membership into the 2013 Senior Honor Society of York College of Pennsylvania. I take passion in my academic studies and my community involvement. The opportunity to be recognized for the impact I have made on my college and local community is truly flattering. After spending my first two years at Millersville University, I began my studies at York College in my third year of college as a junior. Living in Spring Grove, I made the decision to live at home, work a part-time job, and commute to York College. These factors are all things that could have impacted my campus-life involvement, but I was determined to not let these factors impact my college experience. I jumped head first into the York College Community and was accepted with open arms into whatever groups I wanted to become affiliated with on campus.…

They say that community college is a lot worse than a four-year college or university. They say only slackers go to community colleges so they barely have to do any type of work. They say professors are terrible and do not know what they are doing at all. They say that anyone who goes to a community college will not get a good job in the future. They may say all of these and more, but have the people saying this ever attended a community college before? Probably not! There are advantages and disadvantages, but every college or university has them.…

In high school, I knew I would have to take AP biology in order to get credit for my premedical requirements in college. I signed up for the course fully understanding the hard work that I would need to put in and the amount of time I would be spending each day to maintain a good grade in the course. I had this attitude of determination in doing well in this class up until the second semester of the class. I had begun to notice my work in the class begin to lower in the effort, even though I swore I was putting the same amount of effort in. My grades were lower than what I was expecting and it would make me upset to think that I felt as though I was really trying in this class, yet my grades aren’t reflecting all my hard work. As time passed by, and this kept happening over and over again, I began to have changes in my attitude. I began to realize that it is ok if I don’t get an A in the course or if I get a C on the test. My attitude changed when I decided that I shouldn’t take the AP exam even though that was my goal in the beginning of the year.…
