On May 7, 1919, Eva Duarte was born. Ever since Eva was young, she and her four siblings were deemed as illegitimate children. They were told that they were not Duarte’s because their mother, Juana Ibarguren, had them when she was not married to Don Juan Duarte, their father. Duarte was married to Estela Grisolla, whom he had had three daughters with. Eva wanted to prove herself to the people and, most importantly, her father that she was worth more than her illegitimacy deemed her to be. Eva Perón’s desire to rise from her low social status and to disregard the effects of her own illegitimacy helped transform the lives of the lower class of Argentina by providing a voice that similarly disadvantaged people could trust and relate to.…

For my theatre venture, I visited the Gratz College Theater’s rendition of Beauty and the Beast on May 26th. When attending a musical based on a Disney film, the attendees will make critics based on the original movie. This particular production far exceeded any expectations I had going into the theater. Spanning from the directors, to the stage director, to the music played, it was a superb production. The movement and enthusiasm of the actors made the viewer feel like they were transported to that very small French town.…

La Traviata, which translates to “the stranded woman”, is an opera that serves as an optimal example of a musical style in which form follows function. La Traviata follows the main character, Violetta Valéry, in her journey to battle the disease that is slowly but surely consuming her, as well as the cruel fate of her short time with the love of her life. This opera can be simply broken down by plot in relation to character development in relation to musical choice by the composers which follows the mood of the characters highlighted during the opera, thus the form (of the music) following function (plotline and character growth, or, in Violetta’s case, physical degradation).…
