Fahrenheit 451 Lyrics Assignment F Hour

Song: Burning by The Whitest Boy Alive
Lyrics: “So many people telling me one way,
So many people telling me to stay” Quote: (Captain Beatty) “Well, Montag, take my word for it, I’ve had to read a few in my time, to know what I was about, and the books say nothing!”

This quote from the story takes place when Captain Beatty is at Montag’s home and he is talking to him because of the book that Beatty knows Montag is in possession of. Captain Beatty says a number of things, but all of these things all are aimed at getting Montag to convince Montag to give up the book and continue burning.
These two quotes were chosen because of the way that the song reflects the way that Montag constantly receives contradicting opinions from Captain Beatty, Clarisse, and Mildred on how he should think and feel about the way the world around him, and this quote from the book is a perfect example of Captain Beatty trying to tell Montag what he should believe.

Song: Fear of the Dark by Iron Maiden
Lyrics: “I have constant fear that something’s always near”

Quote: “He had felt that a moment prior to his making the turn, someone had been there. The air seemed charged with a special calm as if someone had waited there, quietly, and only a moment before he came, simply turned to a shadow and let him through.”

Montag for a while had had an uneasy feeling about a certain corner that he walked past on his way home. One particular day that he had gotten this strange feeling he met a strange girl named Clarisse who claimed she was crazy.
These two passages were chosen because of the similarity in the narrator of the song’s constant fear that something is always near and the feelings that Montag had gotten that made him feel as something had been very near at the beginning of the book.

Song: You Are a Tourist by Death Cab for Cutie

Throught the speech, Beatty keeps on convincing Montag about how he can have curiosity like him, but books are just boring, useless and unhealthy at the end of the day. Captain Beatty soon shows up with the intention of checking on how Montag is feeling. In all honesty it seems that he knows that Montag has at least one book. In a casual conversation in which he never directly confronts Montag, Beatty reminds him that books are not only illegal they are, also a waste of time. He then tells Montag that many firemen, at one time or another, steal books however, he says that it is a phase they quickly outgrow. Beatty then recalls the time when people read entire books. As time passed, all the books were condensed into short digests. Books slowly disapeared, and all anyone read were comic books and sex magazines. Before long, books were gone all together. Beatty claims that the government didnt make any formal statement of censorship but advanced technology simply made books useless. Then it was unanimously decided that men should all be alike and equal in intelligence. Since books were “loaded guns” that could give a person extra knowledge, they were all destroyed.…

In the beginning, Montag desires to learn about the world of literature which he has always rejected without question. He realises his thirst for knowledge after an old woman burns herself protecting her books. After seeing the woman’s passion, Montag makes it his priority to understand the meaning behind her actions. In pursuit of his new goal, Montag reconnects with Faber. While conversing, Montag decides the best form of action is to revolt against the firemen because “the firemen structure itself could be burnt” (81;pt.2). However, Montag’s plan quickly goes awry, as his emotions begin to take the reigns. Montag dramatically goes rogue, reacting foolishly to his wife's friends. As a result, the women turn Montag in, causing a rift with his chief, Beatty. As punishment, Beatty forces Montag to burn his house and attempts to arrest him. Eventually, Montag’s anger boils over and he is “push[ed] toward[s] murder” (113; pt.3). Consequently, Montag sets Beatty on fire, ultimately killing him. Entirely off the beaten path, Montag decides to scrap his plans and run. Mid-flee, he makes a passing decision to continue his plan of harming the other firemens’ reputations. When Montag enters fellow fireman’s house and hides literature, the reader finds that Montag’s emotions hampers his ability to productively impact…
