1. What were the social bases for the flourishing democracy of the early mid-19th century?
During that time, property ownership was not required to vote. This made the older states and the ones who had not taken into account this right “reconsidered democracy’s economic basis during 1820s and 1830s” (357).
2. What is meant by the term “The American System”? What were its three pillars?
It was a government-promoted economic development labeled by Henry Clay and approved by President J. Madison during his State of the Union message in December 1815. The three basic pillars of these program were a “new national bank, a tariff on imported manufacturing goods and federal financing of improved roads and canals” (365).
3. What efforts were made in this period to strengthen the economic integration of the nation, and what major crises hindered these efforts?
The construction of new roads and canals that would allow a better communication between states and transportation of goods were some of the efforts made during this period. However, situations like the Panic of 1819 where “European demand for American farm products returned to normal levels, the economic bubble burst” (366); the Missouri Controversy which consisted on the fact that the state protected slavery and did not allowed the entrance of free blacks to this state, causing controversy among the other nations, and last but not least, the resentment towards the Second Bank of the United States.
4. What are the three principles of the Monroe Doctrine?
Those principles were that the United States would reject all intention of colonization from Europe to any part of the Americas; The United States would not interfere in the wars occurring in the European continent and last but not least, European powers were warned to not interfere in any of the Latin American States.
