| HAND-HELD CALCULATOR | | In the early 1970s, the daily lives of people throughout the developed world were changed profoundly by the advent of a small electronic machine that could per-form basic mathematical problems much more quickly and more accurately than they could be worked out on paper. Calculators expanded the math capabilities of everyone from high school students to businessmen. The original compact calculator was the abacus, developed in China in the ninth century. The young French mathematician Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) invented the first adding machine in 1642, a clever device driven by gears and capable of performing mechanical addition and subtraction. The first commercially successful adding machine was developed in 1886 by William Seward Burroughs (1855-1898). The "Millionaire," a machine invented by Otto Steiger in 1894, was the first adding machine also capable of direct multiplication. | The hand-held pocket calculator was invented at Texas Instruments, Incorporated (TI) in 1966 by a development team which included Jerry D. Merryman, James H. Van Tassel and Jack St. Clair Kilby. In 1974 a basic patent for miniature electronic calculators has been issued to Texas Instruments Incorporated. The patent is for personal-sized, battery-operated calculators which have their main electronic circuitry in a single integrated semiconductor circuit array, such as the popular "one-chip" calculators. | | This represents another in a series of landmark developments at Texas Instruments directly relating to miniature calculators. In 1958, Texas Instruments

For example, most procedures for adding or subtracting multidigit numbers essentially reduce the calculation to a series of sums or differences of single-digit numbers (or corresponding multiples of 10, 100, etc.). There are, however, some fundamental differences between standard algorithms and the strategies that children construct to solve multidigit problems. Standard algorithms have evolved over centuries for efficient, accurate calculation. For the most part, these algorithms are quite far removed from their conceptual underpinnings. Invented strategies, on the other hand, generally are derived directly from the underlying multidigit concepts. For example, with standard addition and subtraction algorithms, numerals are aligned so that the ones, tens, hundreds, and larger digits can be added in columns. But in the addition of columns, no reference is made to the fact that the addition involves the same unit (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.); one simply adds numbers in a column. Most invented strategies, on the other hand, specifically label the units being combined. For example, in the above addition examples, the invented strategies are based on adding 30 and 20 or 3 tens and 2 tens rather than adding two numbers that appear in the same column.1 Sequence of Development of Major Concepts and Procedures Longitudinal…

In 1944 the very first electronic- mechanical computer called MARK 1 was created at Harvard. This machine was a massive calculator that was fifty one feet wide and eight feet tall (Chee, 1997). The beginning of the smaller computers that we know today started in 1959 when Honeywell developed the first computers that used transistors. These were followed by IBM who used integrated circuits. The very first personal computers were built in the 1970’s with the computers that are recognizable today starting in 1974 with…

At age fourteen, Blaise started to attend his father’s meetings. While there he met Girard Desargues and at age fifteen came to admire his work. In June of 1639, Blaise Pascal came in with a piece of paper holding most of his mind’s geometric theorems, including Pascal’s mystic hexagon. That winter, Pascal’s family moved once again, this time to Rouen, France. Etienne Pascal was given a tax collector job for Upper Normandy. Shortly after moving, Blaise published Essay on Conic Sections in February of 1640. Pascal invented the first digital calculator to help his father with tax collecting. He worked on it for an agonizing three years between 1642 and 1645. He named his creation, the Pascaline. He ran into problems though because…
