How American Football Works
How to Play Football

Football, also known as American football, is a team game that combines strategy and physical play. The object of football is to advance the ball up the field by running and passing the ball, and scoring a touchdown by crossing the ball into the end zone. Professional football, high school football, and college football are all highly popular spectator sports in the United States.
Football History

Football originated from a primitive game of rugby played in America in the 1840s. In 1880, Walter Camp, considered the "Father of American Football," exchanged the traditional rugby scrum for a line of scrimmage. In 1882, the four down system was introduced to negate Princeton and Yale's strategy to hold the ball without trying to score. The following year, Camp reduced the number of players to eleven, and introduced the seven-man offensive line, with a quarterback, two halfbacks, and a full back. The first professional game was played in 1895. The National Football League (NFL) began in the early 1920s. Today, football is one of the most popular sports in the United States.
Football Rules

Football is played by two teams, with eleven players from each team on the field at a time. A football field is 120 yards long and 53 1/3 yards wide, including a field of 100 yards and two end zones of ten yards each. A game of football consists of four 12-15 minute quarters, depending on the level of play.

The game begins with a coin toss. The winning team gets to decide if they would like to receive the ball, or which end of the field they would like to defend in the first half. One team then kicks the ball to the other team. A kick off occurs at the beginning of each half, and after every score.

The team that takes control of the ball has four attempts, called downs, in which to advance the ball ten yards. When the offense succeeds in gaining ten yards they receive a new set of downs. If the offensive team fails to gain ten yards after four

Flickerball was created by Davidson College in 1951 for an alternative for football. Flickerball is very similar to American football. It is usually played in gym classes. The offensive game rules are that players are divided into two equal teams. One team taking the ball at their 10 yard line starts the game. Only passing and catching may advance the football. Passes may be overhand, underhand, or sidearm and in any direction but must go at least 5 years. Hand-offs are illegal. Players most stop once they have caught the ball and past it within 5 seconds. If the ball touches the ground or floor the ball goes to the other team. There are no downs as the ball is continuously in play. It is a touch down when a player catches a pass in the end zone. All touchdowns are worth 1 point. The game is played best when the offensive team spreads out and keeps moving using the entire field.…

Flag Football is a version of American or Canadian football. It is very popular worldwide. The basic rules of the game are similar to those of the mainstream game that is often called tackle football but instead of tackling players to the ground the defensive team must remove a flag or flag belt form the ball carrier “ de flagging” to end a down. Other rules are you can have a minimum of five players. No jewelry or things like that that would get in the way. All pads and braces must be worn above the waist. Bare feet are not allowed you must wear tennis shoes or rubber cleats. Cleats with metal are not okay if you do wear them you won’t be able to play. There are no set uniforms but you have to tuck in your shirt or jersey. You don’t need a ball or bat or racket of any kind to play this game. You just need flag belts. They are like a belt that you can clip or snap on to your body. They have flags hanging down that allow other players to pull off of you. They have to be visible to the other players. That is why their shirt has to be tucked in. Free kicks are not aloud in flag football only punting and it can not be quick punting that is not aloud either. Touchdowns are the biggest way to get points just like in American football. It gives the team six points. Each team is aloud two one minute time out period per half. The game can go from about one to two hours long. It is played all over the United States. There can be anywhere from as little of four to eleven or twelve players on each team. It is one of the only sports that can be played with both male and female on the field at one time. Or they can have their own games. The sport has a strong amateur following and several nation and international competitions each year sponsored by various associations and companies. This is accomplished by carrying, passing or kicking the football across the goal line. The game begins with opposing kick off and kickoff return teams on opposite sides of the field. Kickoffs occur at the beginning of each half and after a touchdown. A team may also kick a field goal for score when it has been unable to score and is within fifty yards of the end zone or after the team scored a touchdown. Once kick-off occurs the return team attempts to run the ball back down field across the goal line and into the end zone for a touch-down. The kick off team executes defensive tasks to stop the ball carrier’s forward progress. Penalties for an off side occurs whenever a player gets ahead of the ball or violates or crosses the neutral zone between teams prior to the ‘snap’ of the ball that triggers the start of play. Physically blocking an opposing player is perfectly fine but special rules are associated with receivers. The infraction is termed pass interference and is usually called against the defensive player when the defender interferes with the offensive receiver prior to that receiver catching a thrown football. After scoring a touchdown, the offensive team is given the option of how it wants to complete the conversion or point after attempt: a kick for one point or a run for two point conversion. The most common tactic is for a team…

The players tap the ground with their sticks once, then tap their sticks together three times before going for the ball. The other players must be at least 5 yards from the ball during a Bully. The ball is moved toward the goal by use of the stick, using only the flat left-hand side. Players make advances towards the opposition’s goal by either dribbling, pushing the ball along or by passing to a teammate. They will either take the ball on or pass to another teammate until they reach the striking circle. This is the zone in front of the goal that is a semicircle with a radius of 16 yards, affectionately nicknamed the “D”. All goals have to be scored from inside this space. Goals are scored when the ball passes over the goal line between the two goal posts. These are centrally positioned on each end line. For the goal to count, however, the ball must either be struck by a player inside the striking circle or touch the stick of an attacking player, standing inside the striking circle, before crossing the line. If play becomes too intense, fouls or infractions become more common. The infraction that is made most often is…

Football (as well as rugby and soccer) are believed to have descended from the ancient Greek game of harpaston. Harpaston is mentioned frequently in classical literature, where it is often referred to as a “very rough and brutal game“. The rules of this ancient sport were quite simple: Points were awarded when a player would cross a goal line by either kicking the ball, running with it across the goal line, or throwing it across the line to another player. The other team’s objective was simply to stop them by any means possible. There was no specific field length, no side line boundaries, no specified number of players per team, only a glaring lack of rules.…

In 1880, Walter Camp, Yale's rugby captain, created the line of scrimmage and other modern football attributes to improve the game because it was too low scoring (Tuttle, 13). He also changed the scoring system to: safety-1 point, touchdown-2, Point after touchdown-4, and a field goal-3. He then changed the yards kneeded to gain a first down to 5 and used 3 downs(Tuttle, 16). Later coaches changed Camps' rules to rules we use now.…

On offense there are 3 main positions in flag football: quarterback, blockers and wide receivers. The quarterback is responsible for distributing the ball offensively. The wide receiver is suppose to catch the balls from the quarterback and run down the field to the touchdown. Blockers are necessary so that they can try and stop the opposing team from getting to the quarterback. On offense, the two main positions are corners and linemen. Corners defend against the wide receivers from catching the ball. Linemen are usually the ones to rush the quarterback. In flag football, the rules are similar to the usual tackle football except on how to stop the wide receiver from getting to the touchdown area. Instead of tackling, they pull the flags off of the player. Usually the whole belt or single flags that…
