Don’t you think it is hypocritical by identifying every individual’s race/ethnicity?
- How I am a hypocritical based on your values and perspectives? The reason I want to stress about others’ identity because I want to pinpoint others’ cultural pros and cons while encouraging people to diversify the culture instead of assimilating into the American culture.
- Identifying a person’s race, ethnicity, and cultural background is not trying to form a stereotype about them but getting to know them better. Of course, there is individual difference. Are you saying that you do not encourage individual difference? Even a collectivistic society encourages the individual difference to increase …show more content…
their creativity as one of the reasons.
- Or, are you saying that it is a sensitive topic that I should not write out? Well, my values are different than yours after all. If I simply ignore others’ race, ethnicity and cultural backgrounds, our society is going to assimilating everyone without a trace of diversity. Many individuals have difficulty to identify themselves but saying “I am American”. This is contradictory to my promotion of diversity.
- I have encountered many times a person wants to say another person’s race, ethnicity, or background but fear that it might be racist to do so. Well. Is it? You are solely talking about that person within that racial group or ethnicity group, why everyone is so oversensitive to acknowledge others’ backgrounds? But then people would say things like “oh yeah XXX (racial group/country of origin) are XXX”. This is ironic. This is hypocritical.
- Just to tell you more about my background, as a Hokchew/Hoochyu Chinese (I am still Chinese even though I identify myself as a Hokchew Chinese), my language and culture was/is oppressed by the mainstream and official Chinese language, official Mandarin, in China. Every Chinese language formed a distinct yet kind of similar culture to each other. The government in the past few decades promoted the official Mandarin, oppressed Mandarin dialects, and discriminated against other non-Mandarin Chinese languages by prohibiting the broadcast of non-Mandarin Chinese languages in public. Only Cantonese and Taiwanese Chinese can uphold against the oppression due to the existence of Hong Kong and Taiwan, and their popular cultures.
- As an immigrant, I have experienced the linguistic isolation that only English is promoted as the lingua franca in this society. I am perceived as a foreigner for life as long as I have an accent. No many individuals care about learning others’ cultures as I do. Therefore, everyone who is ESL (English as a Second Language) person would be left out in the conversation. Many American schools do not accommodate ESL students with programs well but simply offer basic ESL courses. Thus for ESL students, they often have to struggle in the curriculum because they have to spend more time than a native to study for a subject. This unfair system has been there for many years.
- In conclusion, I am saying that I would not simply identify people with the race/ethnicity but also cultural background, political affiliation, interests, hobbies, and life experiences, etc. By stating their identities, affiliations and many other aspects of their life, I am writing a diary of people I encountered in my life and sharing my vision with other people about others’ life on the social media. Thus, others would acknowledge the difference and pay respect to others while knowing and improving their shortcomings. In the meantime, I admit that I do post more negative posts to vent my negativity. But it does not mean that I am a hypocrite.
- In a society dominated by a culture, people would not perceive others with different perspective but the majority’s way of thinking. This makes people biased because they only see things in one’s shoes oftentimes.
- Everyone is different as well as myself. As being oppressed many years in terms of language, cultural expression, and identity, it is a necessary for me to acknowledge the difference by pinpointing out. If you think I am a hypocrite, then you might have a different way of thinking or a way of what the majority usually thinks, that is, a person is a racist when he identifies others’ identities while talking bad about “some” of them within the identity group.
- Then, we should talk about the Generalization vs. Specification.
Generalization vs. Specification
- I admit that sometimes I would forget to include some adjectives including but not limited to “some”, “a few”, “the majority of” and “most of” before the identities. But, I do not and do not mean to generalize a race, an ethnicity, or people from the same country of origin. If you say that even if I include adjectives like “some” in front of identities, it is wrong to talk bad about them in public. Then I disagree with you! Think again. You are basically saying that I should not attack the “bad” people among a group of people if I identify them as the group of people. You are saying that I can attack the “bad” people if I do not identify them at the first place. This is what I called the “oversensitivity”.
- There are always good and bad. If I attack a person verbally because of his evil behavior to other people while identifying his race, then you are saying that I am confirming or creating a racial stereotype or being a racist? NO! WRONG!
- I understand that many ordinary people often use psychological heuristics or mental shortcuts when it comes to distinguish people and get to know a person of a different race. If all of the people are so low on the psychological mentality that they have to use the availability or representativeness heuristics to get to know a person, then I really do not want to accommodate for only those people by not identifying a person’s background to diversity my conversation.
- Will you think all European Americans are robbers when you watch a TV news talking about a white male robbed a store as shown in one news article, “The clerk described the robbers as [ ……] a white male wearing a stripped toboggan hat and a jacket.” NO!
- Will you think all Chinese are evil terrorists simply because they possess what “some” terrorists possess at home? NO!
- Then, why you have the double standard thinking that I am hypocritical by stating what I encountered in life? I understand I oftentimes vent my negativity on the social media, but how about other posts than those two negativity-venting posts?
- Let’s talk about these two posts.
Indian/Pakistani Internationals Post
- It was a complaint in nature.
But I only pointed out those few Indian/Pakistani “internationals” while stating that I don’t find any of my Indian/Pakistani friends having the same smell. You assume that I think all of them smell bad. Why? I stated those adjectives “some” “a few” in front of their identities. I did not generalize them.
- You assume that I might not be right with their identities. How do you know? Based on my linguistic skill, I can distinguish south Asian accents after I have watched some Indian movies with English subtitles. Or you think I simply identify people’s ethnicity and country of origin by their skin color? Do you really think I am a hypocritical racist? You DO actually.
- You argue that How do I know if the person is definitely Indian/Pakistan? What if they are not? Then, should I get an answer for you by asking them one day to confirm your suspicion? I can do that just for this.
- You’re saying that because I complain about “some” or “a few” of their smell mixing with sweat and spices while identifying their identities is discriminating against them by confirming to “the stereotype that all Indians and Pakistanis have an unpleasant smell”.
NO!
- Why do you think I am confirming to the stereotype? I was simply stating the fact to only some of them. I also said that the Indian/Pakistani American friends of mine do not have this smell.
A few wealthy Jewish Americans’ political influence Post/Write things no one can be against you
- You did not explain this post well by omitting that I was simply comparing Asian Americans’ oppression with other European Americans and Jewish Americans. In this post, I only said that a few wealthy Jewish Americans and Jewish American congressmen hold too much power influencing our political process and dominate some of points of view in the society that somehow prevents many people making racial stereotypes against them while adding the history of Jews in World War II.
- I feel some of your points of view are too optimal. If you want me to write something under scrutiny that “everyone” agrees, then everyone has to spend years of life doing researches to come up with a post with a detailed explanation of thoughts. If you simply want me to go in depth, then I would be willing to discuss in depth with you if you desire.
- This is not a good example of you trying to prove that how judgmental and hypocritical I am. Let’s talk about being judgmental.
Judgmental
- Everyone is judgmental including animals. The discrimination is one of the means for creatures to survive by detecting the danger. Only a person is honest to admit one’s perspectives, then the one can be improved to be less judgmental. Thus, you are judgmental as well in terms of my point of view. You might not like it.
- But, I thank you for acknowledging that you do have the stereotype of Indian/Pakistani smell of spices. You might deny but I can tell you do have the stereotype by hear your saying that. You also have certain stereotypes and try to not hold them as true, which is good. Every moral person is trying to be unbiased or judgmental. Many people are learning to be unbiased/judgmental as well as myself.
- No one is perfect. If you think a person can be nonjudgmental, then I have to say that person does not exist as a human being but a spirit – as least I have never encountered one in my life. As I said, “The discrimination is one of the means for creatures to survive by detecting the danger.” Everyone has the ability of discriminating people from things. But this definition of discrimination is different if you do not get what I meant. This discrimination is for survival but to racially discriminate by jailing innocent people and fire able employees.
- There are many definitions of “judgmental”. Are you saying I am judgmental as a hypocritical racist? If so, let’s examine how judgmental I am. I posted some posts regarding the European American party culture. Didn’t I mention that some European Americans do not party on the post? Others I have basically touched above in terms of the two posts.
Sensitivity & Friend Zone
- If a person thinks I generalize a group of people while I specify only “a few” and “some”, then it sounds like an “oversensitivity” to me. That person is simply wanting to shut my mouth by saying that I should not identify people’s background at the first place like many responders on my post.
- My life is short. Even if others hold different opinions than I do, I can still be friends with them. But if people think I am an evil person by looking at the posts, then they have not yet understood many details about the concepts of racism, judgment, sensitivity, specification, and cultural backgrounds, etc. I do not desire others’ applauses and agreements. I have my principles. I hold it till I am proved wrong otherwise.
Overall
- A lot of your sayings are from a different point of view than I have. That’s why you disagree with me so much. I hope you can see it from different perspectives.
- I think you generalize my opinions and also only pinpoint the complaint posts of mine. How about other posts? How am I extrapolate the opinions for some to the group of all? Why do you think I should not identify people’s background? What is the meaning behind this quest of proving that I am hypocritical? Do you think your way of thinking is better than I do? You want to push your ideals, values, and perspectives on me? Do you want to prove that I was doing wrong basically?
- I really would like to know you reason behind this? There must be something bothering you that made you push your to talk about this sensitive discussion on the table today in Hangar while others were present. This stirred up a little bit of heat among us and discomfort to others. So I think I have a right to know why?
