Ceremonies of the Hopi

Specific Purpose: My specific purpose is to inform my audience the different ceremonies of the Hopi people and its significance.
Central Idea: Today I would like to inform you about ceremonies that go on during the year on my reservation.
PERSONAL INTRODUCTION: Hello, my name is Willard Lomakema; I am from the village of Mishongnovi in second mesa Arizona.
INTRODUCTION
I. (Attention Getter) how many of you have been out to the Hopi reservation? Have you been out there when something was going on?
II. (Reveal your topic) usually the only time when there are a lot of people out on the reservation is when ceremonies are going on.
III. (Establish Credibility) being Hopi I know what some of these ceremonies mean.
IV. (Preview of Main Points: today I’m going to share with you the different types of dances or ceremonies like Social dances, Kachina dances and the Society dances or ceremonies that go on during the year and what they are for.
(TRANSITION: first)
BODY
I. (First Main Point) –Social dances are for everyone to see and enjoy
(Internal Preview of SPs) there are two main social dances that are done during the year and they are the buffalo dance and the butterfly dance.
A. (Sub point) - the buffalo dance
1. (S-SP) it’s done during the winter time in the months of January.
a. (SSSP) they pray for snow and nourishment
b. (SSSP) purifies the ground in hopes that the Hopi can have a bountiful growing season.
B. (Sub point) the butterfly dance
1. (S-SP) done during the end of summer in the months of August to September
a. (SSSP) a joyful time for everyone
b. (SSSP) give thanks for the harvest that was just made.
(Internal Summary of SPs) theses dances are only performed in the months that I’ve indicated otherwise the ground and weather is going to get confused and may not produce a harvest at all.
