My Favorite Restaurant

As a child, I wasn’t fond of eating out. My family would eat out at least once a week, often more than once, and every time we went anywhere, but for a little place called Rivenee’s, it was a challenge for my parents. Rivenee’s was that lucky exception – I loved the place and this made my parents love it too. The place seemed so magical and fascinating to me then, when I was still an elementary school kid, and surprisingly, the place still very much fascinates me today. Just recently, when I visited my old family house for Thanksgiving, I was surprised and pleased to find out the place still operated and, in fact, was still run by the same family. Apart from the house in which I grew up, Rivenee’s is probably the dearest place to me in the little town, just outside of San Ramon, where I was born and raised. What is so special about the place? Well, it is hard to answer this question in just a few words.

First of all, Rivenee’s is a small and cozy place, and this is what probably earned my love in the first place. This, and the people who worked, and still work there of course. Unlike the bigger restaurants, diners and chain buffets my parents also took me to, Rivenee’s was a family-owned business run by a middle-aged couple, Janette and Derek. When I think about them now, I still remember their warm smiles and sincere care for everyone around them. Missis Jan, as I would call her, loved orange shades, both in her outfits and in the restaurant’s interior decor. Warm orange and yellow-pomegranate furniture, sunny-colored napkins and curtains, country-style hard wooden tables and stools at the bar – everything was solid and comfortable about the place. Missis Jan would always have something orange in her outfit – to match the place, as I then thought. Be it a bright orange ribbon in her hair, or a peachy neat cotton dress, or creamy red nail polish – this woman always belonged to the place like nobody else, and I doubt it was only the

As my family and I stepped d in, we were greeted and welcomed with loud beautiful music, which older families wouldn’t enjoy. I stood head to toe with the overwhelming menu of countless different meal choices. It was nicely dressed in a antique wrap of design around the edges. Each menu choice was separated in categories labeled with elegant and beautiful text, which made me love this place with more passion. I didn’t have one thought of my first choice of a meal for the night. To get saved from the black hole of the Riscky's menu was the generous waiter dressed in a formal manner. She walked up to our smooth wood grain finish table and greeted us with pure sincere gratitude knowing that we didn’t have one clue of what to order. She explained her favorite dish on the menu and I was absolutely certain It was soon to be my favorite as well.…

They wore bright red jackets and stood out from the town, which was described as, “dun-coloured half-timbered houses leaning secretively together”. The fact that they have colour and the rest of the town does not shows that Vianne and Anouk are the only people who are free within the town. Another example of this is Vianne’s shop with “red leather seats and chrome stems, cheerily kitsch. The walls are bright daffodil colour. Poitou’s old orange armchair lolls cheerily in one corner. A menu stands to the left, hand written and coloured by Anouk in shades of orange and red”. The strong use of colour imagery with Vianne and what she owns shows the reader that she is different from the rest of the town and is free. Harris shows freedom within the characters through colour imagery and the symbolism of…

Food is something we all enjoy. It contains the essentials to sustaining life such as nutrients, fat and protein. But in a culture where shared meals are not that common as they once were, food also can create everlasting memories and connections with the people we hold the dearest. Bonny Wolf wrote a short essay called, “ Food Traditions: The Thread That Links Generations”, in which she states that, “Food binds families together, keeps generations connected and creates community” (Wolf 136). I strongly agree with this statement because not only do I have a treasure trove of memories all linked to food and family but also because there is so much evidence that provides back up for this claim.…

From the muted, sickly green of the walls, to the stark contrast of the blood-red carpet, color plays an important role in setting the tone of this piece. Correspondingly, the colors used in the chief subjects of the painting (young girls, sunflower, carpet) are less organic than the hues used for the more subtle areas of the painting (walls, door, steps). The neutral tones of the background help to “corral” the viewer's eye into looking at the focal point and the action happening around it. In the same token, Tanning’s use of complementary colors allows the red carpet to seemingly “cut” through the painting, providing a perfect backdrop for the vibrancy of the yellow sunflower. The two girls are dressed in white, yet, the figure against the door frame carries semblances from the sunflower and the carpet, represented in her cardigan and the petal she holds. The two lost petals at the foot of the stairs become almost an afterthought when compared to the stark hue of the sunflower, as they are slightly more muted shade of yellow. Finally, the open door at the end of the hallway leaves the viewer with many unanswered questions. Upon first glance, the hazy warm tones may convey a sense of an emblazoned fire, but upon further inspection, it could simply be the light of a hotel lamp flooding the hallway. What is happening behind the door? Is this where the girls came from, and if so will they return? Tanning leaves all these questions up in the air with her use of ambiguity in the focus and color of the final…

Grandmother is very noisy and likes to be the center of everyone’s attention. Even though she didn’t want to go to Florida she was the first one sitting in a car next morning. The way she acts, thinks and dresses up shows us that she is an old fashion woman “Her collars and cuffs were white organdy trimmed with lace and at her neckline she ha pinned a purple spray of cloth violets containing a sachet. In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dean on the highway would know at once that she was a lady”. On the way to Florida, as they stop to get some food she’s having a conversation with Red Sam- an owner of restaurant about old times, how nice it used to be back in a day, and how everything changed. The way she talks about it just prove us that she doesn’t’ live in the present, but in the past. She has old views in a new world. “People are certainly not nice like they used to be” “He and the grandmother discussed better times. The old lady said that in her opinion Europe was entirely to blame for the way things were now.”…

We headed into San Francisco early. I was surprised that there wasn’t very much traffic; I guess we were after the morning rush hour. The drive north was almost as pretty as the drive down the coast. California should be “The Natural State”, not Arkansas! Once we made it into the city, we had to cross the Golden Gate Bridge. As we emerged from Golden Gate Park, the goliath appeared before us. We just crossed it both ways, but I was in awe of how big the bridge actually was. I had never appreciated it until I saw it with my own eyes. When we came back into the city, we drove around to many of the different neighborhoods. San Francisco is incredibly diverse. We drove through “Little Japan” and “China Town”, and we parked in North Beach. North Beach is where an established population of people with Italian heritage lives and work, “Little Italy” in any other big city. We were craving some good Italian food, and we definitely found some. The restaurant didn’t have a name on their sign, but we risked it and stopped there to eat. It was authentic Italian food from scratch. They made their own noodles, sauces, bread, and dressings. The dish I had was the best Italian food I’d ever eaten. My dad felt the same way about his dish as well. After our delicious lunch, we decided to drive around the city a little while longer, and then head back to the hotel so we didn’t get stuck in rush hour…

For my entire career, I have traveled far and wide, giving my opinion of the food at a variety of unique, cultural, and astonishing restaurants. Some of my reviews have been fantastic, others atrocious, but the John Adams Cafe Cafeteria was the finest culinary experience I have ever had. As I strolled into the enormous restaurant called the John Adams Cafe Cafeteria, I was immediately impressed. The modern style of the dining area gave an impression of luxury and royalty. A waiter instantly greeted me with a warming welcome, a massive smile on his face, and was jubilant to take my order. The walls were adorned with decorative paintings that probably cost a lot of money. The ceiling was decorated with gigantic golden chandeliers, and the dark wooden floor was superbly polished and cleaned. In the background, lovely jazz music was playing, making the establishment seem classy. I ordered my meal with quickly, and in just ten minutes my food was handed to me on a silver platter, and scooped onto a fancy plate, my drink and silverware off to the side on the polished wooden table. It was time to enjoy.…
