MBA Observation Report
There are more than 100,000 students enrolled in the Shelby County Schools (SCS) system, with most of

these students attending the 169 schools in Memphis. Approximately one third of the children are living

below the poverty level. A high crime rate, poor health care, low standardized test scores,

incarceration, and gang involvement are commonplace among these economically challenged children.

At this point in time, Shelby County public schools are battling the Achievement School System (ASD)

and Green Dot charter schools for funds. Several SCS schools are I-Zone schools. I-Zone schools are

those with extended day hours. I-Zone schools have better standardized test results than ASD schools.

engagement with students, pressure point techniques, empathy training, sensitivity training, crisis

training, and use of appropriate communication.

educational environment, there are a number of employees and co-workers who hold advanced

degrees. A MBA degree is preferred or required for most upper management positions.

Also, I think that a business approach would be a better way to resolve situations involving SCS students.

Applying knowledge from these courses would make a real difference. Below, I have included just a few

examples of courses included in the MBA program at Bethel that I know will be beneficial to me as I

continue my work at SCS.

• Statistics will be used when obtaining information to identify at risk youth, at risk schools, and at

risk officers.

• Organizational Behavior will be a method of identifying weaknesses in the organization in

For seven consecutive years, the state of South Carolina rated the school as At-Risk, bringing in specialists in English, Math, and Science to help turn the school around. The test scores were in the bottom 5% in the state and less than 50% of the students who started Carolina High graduated with their 9th grade cohort. The teacher turnover rate was high, where 15 to 20% of the teachers left after each school year ended. It becomes obvious that many poor children begin their young lives with an education that is far inferior to that of the children who grow up in wealthier communities. They are not given an equal opportunity from the start. Although all children are required to attend school until age 16, there are major differences in schools and they appear to be drawn along lines of race and social class. Locally here in California it was found that there was only a 1.5% dropout rate in…
