Melenie Reflection
Melenie, you have touched on one of the comments which I found surprising in this weeks reading. A “pastoral counselors should be cautious about immediately assuming that all problems a queer person is experiencing in life are related to being queer.” (Hays, 2015, p.342) Prior to this week’s reading I believed this should be very obvious. I would not want to go to counselor and have them say the problem’s I am experiencing in life are because I am black and being discriminated against. If I heard that I would possibly feel hopeless, because just like the queer person who cannot change their queer, I cannot change my

Throughout history, society has shown a particular dislike for groups of people who did, or did not follow the “social norm;” two groups that fit this criteria are people of the LGBT and African-American communities. With laws and other restrictions such as interracial and same-sex marriage bans, and the Jim Crow laws being passed against them, LGBT and African-American people have faced many trials. African-Americans were denied the right to be called human because of their skin color. LGBT people were denied their right to be called human because they did not find themselves attracted to who society felt they should. After reading George Chauncey’s “The Legacy of AntiGay Discrimination” and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, it has become apparent that there are many similarities between people of the LGBT and African-American communities.…

The major obstacles engaging with this particular client is the apparent lack of research on approaching a gay client with cultural competency, especially individuals who are intersected with other minority groups, in this case being Jewish as well as an older adult. According to Eubank-Carter, Curckell, and Goldfried (2005), as of 2003, only 54% of LGB-related articles have been based on empirical research and even less research addressing LGB people of color at a mere 12%. The lack of research on the client’s identity as a gay male poses as an obstacle as the clinician is a straight female, forming a barrier into building rapport on the basis of showing empathy and being relatable. According to Hepworth, Rooney, Rooney, Strom-Gottfried, and Larsen (2013), building rapport with a client enables clients to gain trust in the helpful intent and goodwill of the social worker...” and further emphasizes, “cultural factors and language differences compound potential barriers to rapport even further (pg. 47). The multiple cultural differences between the clinician and client acts as a barrier to building rapport as well as connecting the client with connection to…

We refer to basic human rights like the freedom of speech and association, liberty, and equal treatment in court as civil rights, because they are fundamental rights that each and every citizen should not be denied on the basis of their sex, race, or religious belief. In the last one-hundred years we, as a human population, have seen many acts of discrimination against our civil rights on a large scale. In Kathryn Stockett’s novel, “The Help” one of those times were brought into light, the African-American Civil Rights Movement. Many say that members of the Lesbian, Gay, Transgendered, and Bisexual (LGBT) community today experience similar discrimination to the black experience of Southern U.S in the 1960’s because of the fight for civil rights, the fact that members are shunned by their area, and how people actively work against the cause that they try to establish.…

    Men on the Dl

I agree with what Brenda Browder is saying about men on the down-low. They need to admit the truth about being homosexual because they are not only harming themselves but also hurting their family. She mentioned that men on the DL are harming themselves because someone could use their secret against them by blackmailing them. Consequently end their career and their reputation. It is better to admit the truth than to live a double life. They are harming their family by possibility passing on sexually transmitted diseases to their wife and children. Another important point she made is that being black is already difficult enough, but being a black homosexual man is even more challenging because the community often look down upon them. The black community often shun people for being gay, which encourages more homosexual men to hide their true identity and consequently forces them to use women as cover ups. This sounds like a vicious cycle that needs to end starting from the community. Men on the DL don’t consider themselves gay, they think having sex with men is just a “thing” they do. It doesn’t define their identity. This method of thinking causes many proud homosexuals to be very angry because “they feel that it’s casting a negative light on the gay community.”…

Over the last decade, new legislation that would affect the LGBTQ community, however, it was not until recently that legislation was passed that directly affects the field of counseling. On April 27, 2016, Tennessee’s Governor Bill Haslam passed a law that gives mental health counselors and therapist to refuse treatment to LGBTQ patients if the patient’s lifestyle contradicts their principles or beliefs unless it is an emergency situation. This is just the latest law that has been passed by southern states that uses religious grounds to target the LGBTQ community for discrimination. A law similar to this is currently not being considered for implementation in South Carolina but as more states decide to implement this type of law it could be.…

Reflection allows an individual to identify the reasons or purpose of understanding the outcome of a particular situation in depth in term of emotions on thought and feeling on the topic area. In addition, Reflection is something that we do implicitly as part of being human, underpinning our identities through a process of negotiation between our sense of self and our experiences of others (Demetriou, 2000, p.210). Therefore, I have implemented this quote in my professional and personal goals I wanted and have achieved thought-out the process of the module. I have made continues effort in building my confidence in situations that I have felt uncomfortable in.…

I do hope that you took the time to enjoy my genre recreation project. The idea was a very spur of the moment decision, and came to me quite suddenly in the middle of Michael’s craft store. My original thought was to create a scrapbook of a certain characters’ life, and make a sort of collage of events surrounding them. Alex Galvin took me to Michael’s the Monday before the project was due, and I spent hours (or so Alex feels) looking around the craft sections at all the different scrapbooks and pages and stamps galore. I picked up almost everything I needed when I wandered over to the woodcraft section- and there it was: a beautiful wooden shadow box. I immediately dropped everything into Alex’s hands and dashed over to it. As I was looking at it I thought, how original… no one else will think to do this, and a brilliant idea formed in my head. Much to Alex’s dismay, I had him put all of my other supplies back where they came from so that I could start on this new idea.…

Being a gay male, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered in the LGBT community isn’t always easy in today’s society. For those who don’t know what LGBT stands for it stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered. In today’s society some people say gay people choose to be gay, personally I find that highly false and very stereotypical. I myself have always been gay since birth I certainly didn’t choose this for myself, which I wouldn’t change for the world. The day I came out was the first time I finally felt whole, and true to myself.…

The items addressed this week really struck me in ways that I was uncomfortable with. I was taken back by how many different biases there were about different cultures and how they affected the way clinicians could think. When I did all of my observation hours over the past four years, I never had any biases towards any of our patients. We saw a number of patients that were from other cultures or who were involved in the LGBT community and I never looked at or treated them any differently than any of our other patients. Though I felt so strongly against biases, there were several therapists I worked with that had biases towards certain cultures. For our generation, I feel as though I was raised to not look at anyone else differently and that we are all the same person. I have had struggles in the past trying to convey that to other people because I feel very strongly that it is nonsense to view someone differently according to the way they speak, their skin color, or their choices on who they love.…

I believe Michael White identified some of the variables within the language of Diane story or narrative about her life throughout the session. Through the conceptualization phase of the session, Michael White reach his initial plan which was to make contact with Diane, Mathew, and Andrew and to develop some appreciation of their experiences of life while getting an understanding about priorities for discussion. Diane started talking about her professional paper which interest her, she wondered how people cope with kinds, with all kinds of tragedies in their lives, particularly with kids with disabilities. Diane was curious about how people make meaning of their lives after a catastrophic event occurs.…

    Queer Theology Essay

Queer theology has developed in a period of increased acceptance of diversity in Western culture. While homophobia remains a relevant factor in queer theology, hostility and intolerance is increasingly being pushed to the margins. In this context the development of theologies of liberation has afforded queer approaches a voice. This must be tempered with the reality of inclusiveness, because the greater the recognition, the greater its effect on oppressing those that continue to sit at its margins. This includes for example, people living with HIV/AIDS, and the Transgender community. It is for this reason that relational theology is so important. Notions of what is relevant when considering sexuality and gender is informed, at least in…

The key leanings from this class and the readings will certainly resonated with me throughout my social work career. The readings and class discussions have taught me aspects of racism I had never considered, mostly because I am white. Often people who are privileged cannot possibly see the struggles of those who do not receive the same privileges. For example, as a white person, I can open a magazine and know for certain that my skin color will be well-represented. As a straight female, I know that I don’t have any reservations about whether to tell my friends or family about my sexual orientation. Joshua Miller and Anna Garran co-wrote a book, Racism in the United States: Implications for the Helping Professions, that analyzed both social…

There are no prerequisites for love and belonging, we are deserving of love and belonging simply because we exist, we start out in life as hole beings. This is one of the many amazing ideas found in Brene Browns work. But this was such foreign idea to my way of being and of relating to the world that I had no a-ha moment when I encountered it. Only after repeated readings and listenings did the clouds disperse. Theoretically I recognized their truth, but at some level I felt this truth did not include me.…

Research into Queer Studies is on the rise throughout American Liberal Arts colleges. The struggle of being queer in America is only getting more difficult as the public believes that the rights they have are “good enough.” The ruling that they can marry didn’t signify the success of the queer movement, rather it signified the death of it. It is becoming ever more difficult for them to cross social and legal barriers that need to be destroyed because of this. For example, they might be able to marry, but any store can reject making their wedding cake just because they are queer. The oppression of queers goes beyond this, it is deeply rooted in society. They are viewed as abnormal. They are just Others in our capitalist system, put into a state…
