New School Program Hopes to Enrich Students
School Program Hopes to Enrich Students Made to keep students close to their school, Stagg has introduced a new program named PLUS; a club of students reaching out to their peers. Peer Leaders Uniting Students or PLUS was introduced spring of last year and can be found in many SUSD schools and over seven countries. “It’s an organization made to keep our campus together,” said senior Alexander Rebultan, one of the leaders of the club. The club, ran, by English and Leadership teacher Michelle Canfield says that the club was created for students so that they can find their own group identity and address everyday problems that are affecting them and find a solution. PLUS was made to talk about the school’s social issues and create future leaders. PLUS, once a month, holds a forum, a activity meant to get more members into their club. If accepted into the forum, the students must go through an interview and complete tasks. Hang Nguyen, a caseworker, agrees with the idea of the club. “It will benefit students and keep people united and make overall goodness. If they truly want to make the club and the school as one, I have a feeling they can do it.” Freshman Tiva Camacho disagrees with Nguyen. “I don’t think PLUS is a good idea,” she said. “Having a large group of people trying to talk to you during your break and lunch will just be annoying. Instead of solving the problem, they would make it worse. I love eating lunch by myself, just because I like to eat by myself doesn’t mean I have no friends.” The club, which is about a group of thirty students, tries to find someone sitting by themselves and try to work them into a conversation and create a strong bond. “The club sounds like a good idea. Most of the time, kids who eat alone and don’t speak to others just need help to go over that edge,” says Cassandra Chavez, a sophomore. “A club like PLUS is made to do just that.”
