IT113 Homework 1
Structured Cabling Unit 1
Homework Exercise 1.1

1. What industry standards body and standards series numbers do you need to reference for Ethernet applications and cabling?
The IEEE maintains the industry standards for Ethernet Protocols (or applications). This is part of the 802.3 series of standards and includes applications such as 1000Base-T, 1000Base-SX, 10GBase-T, and 10GBase-SR.

2. What are the different types of category 6 cables and what should be recommended this network?
Category 6 and category 6A are the types of cables; I would recommend Cat 6A cable over Cat 6 because cat 6A also supports 10Gbps which is for future speed.

3. What cable would you recommend to offer the best

(This layer is not the application itself, although some applications may perform application layer functions.)
Layer 6: The presentation layer...This is a layer, usually part of an operating system, that converts incoming and outgoing data from one presentation format to another (for example, from a text stream into a popup window with the newly arrived text). Sometimes called the syntax layer.
Layer 5: The session layer...This layer sets up, coordinates, and terminates conversations, exchanges, and dialogs between the applications at each end. It deals with session and connection coordination.
Layer 4: The transport layer...This layer manages the end-to-end control (for example, determining whether all packets have arrived) and error-checking. It ensures complete data transfer.
Layer 3: The network layer...This layer handles the routing of the data (sending it in the right direction to the right destination on outgoing transmissions and receiving incoming transmissions at the packet level). The network layer does routing and

In order to provide speed and reliability, large and enterprise-level networks today are typically constructed in multiple layers. They are the access layer, also called the network edge layer, the aggregation or distribution layer; and the network core layer. The access layer is usually a mesh of network switches, linked to other switches in the aggregation layer, which in turn is linked to the core.…

The next steps ethnet will be taking will be to increases speed and security. An organization using medical equipment or financial information has to consider what security protocols and policies it would use. Using Category 6 twisted pair cabling. These cables are hardier versions of Cat5E and are covered in a shielding that prevents them from being compromised by electrical wiring or magnetic fields. Once the speeds of Ethernet have been completely maxed out, the next upgrade will have to the security features they provide.…

The 7 layers can be split logically into two subgroups. Layers 7 thru 4 focus on the end to end communication of data source and destinations. Layers 3 thru 1 are provide consistent communication between the network devices. An easier way of looking at the OSI model is dividing the upper layers (7, 6, 5) from the lower layers (4, 3, 2, 1). The upper layers deal with application issues and are implemented only in software. The highest layer, the application layer, is the closest to the end user. The lower layers are responsible for the transportation of the data. The physical layer and the data link layer are implemented in hardware and software. The lowest layer, the physical layer, is closest to the physical network medium (the wires, for example) and is responsible for placing data on the medium.…

The Network Layer, as with the previous layers, has its own protocols. In this case we’ll use the Internet Protocol, or IP. IP determines the next destination as the message is routed through the network, places the TCP packet inside an IP packet along with any additional required data and passes in on to the Data Link Layer.…
