Outdoor Activity
Today 26th December 2012 was the first day of my Outdoor Activity Camp. I was very much excited & anxious, as this was the first time I’m leaving my family without any contact for the next five days. This was a camp conducted by “TATA POWER Employees” only.
I was very surprised that i got up early in the morning without alarm or anybody waking me up. I woke up at 5:00 AM in the morning. Then I had a very long fresh up. After that I checked my bag and was totally ready by 7:00 AM. The location I was to report was TATA colony.
My journey to “BHIVPURI” in a BUS started at 7:45 AM. In the BUS, I came across two friends, “ATHARVA & PRATHIK”. Atharva is studying in 8th Standard and Prathik in 7th. It was a coincidence that I was the senior most in the BUS (Studying in 9th standard).
In the mean while we were served Breakfast “Vada Pav”. It was very Yummy. During the journey we three (myself, Atharva & Prathik) made some bunch of Paper rockets and flied them inside & outside the BUS. For some time we talked about the Camp and also discussed about the activities that had taken place in the last camp. My friends told me that Activities like Trekking, Rock climbing, Nature Trail, Orientation, Rappelling & Treasure hunt will be conducted.
As the Journey progressed many children joined en-route. After few minutes later a Sir came to us and introduced himself as Chandra Prakash. We quickly nick named him Moonlight (Chandra – Moon; Prakash – Light). The most interesting thing about him was that he had a TAB which was loaded fully with English, Hindi & old Marathi songs. So we heard some songs.
In the mean time the other boys & girls in the Bus introduced themselves and were having a lot of fun. The BUS was cruising through the Highway and on the both sides of the road were lot of Green trees, Green Vegetation everywhere and was very pleasant to see. It was so serene that I fell in to a quick Nap. When I woke I saw the outer atmosphere was very cool & Pleasant. The BUS was

My stop was in downtown, so I walked out. I was puzzled. Who were these strange people? I sensed the divide between me and the bus passengers socially, culturally, and physically. Ultimately, there was nothing in my past experience in my high school environment that could prepare me for the bus ride, which made me feel awkward and tense. I became conscious of my mannerisms and how I carried myself. For once, I felt like a stranger.…

Once we got to the last step, we could feel everybody’s eyes burning at us. Three rows from the bus door there was an empty seat next to a student. I attempted to sit there, and the student took his back pack, and put it on the seat next to him. I just kept walking. My sister was also trying to sit next to another student; that student also put her bag pack on the seat next to her. One student after another placed their pack backs on the seats next to them. With my eyes full of tears, I looked at my sister with shock. She held my hand very tight, and I felt she might break it. To make matters worse one of the students shouted, “Aren’t you supposed to ride a camel, not a bus?”…

We’ve reached base camp approximately 10 days after our starting time from the helicopter. There are many things we must do to set up camp, like collect heavy rocks and set up the whole camp. Many people are “too tired” to work because of our 10 day hike even though we have had many times to rest over night from staying at different places in Nepal; but since we have such strong teams and leaders, everyone is forced to work. Today will be a long day…I can already tell.…

I began to feel nervous, I felt like I was going to throw up and I wasn’t feeling too great. I have never been away from my mom for a whole week. I was a little excited when everyone was talking about how wonderful it’s going to be there at outdoor ED and how when there siblings been there before and they have told them how cool it’s going to be. Rachel and I played a lot of games like a ghost and I spy. It was really entertaining when we were playing games, but only because it’s got everything off my mind. I liked looking outside and looking at cool stuff that the bus had passed by on the way there. I slept on the bus for a little bit, but then Mr Engle woke me up because he wanted to take a picture of Taylor, Rachel, and I but then I fell back to sleep. I also read a little bit of my book, but it wasn’t interesting, so I fell back to sleep again because I was really tired..…
