Race and Ethnicity

The people of American are still fighting each day to get rid of the word prejudice. Prejudice is an unsupported generalization about a category of people. Being prejudice leads to stereotyping, this leads to racism. Why do people judge other people by the color of their skin? Why do they think their race is more superior? Black people are judged because they were once slaves; the fact that they were owned by white people has led them to this day to be discriminated against. Muslims in the United States are all considered terrorist because of the attack on 9/11. Just because Muslims attacked the United States does not mean that every Muslim had a voice in their attack. Any person that is not white in the United States will be considered a minority and discriminated against by most. In class we watched a YouTube video of ABC’s Primetime show What would you do? This is a hidden camera show that aims to test bystanders’ reactions in ethically challenged scenarios. One of the video segments that caught my attention was the Muslim girl in the bakery. As the man behind the counter continued to call her a terrorist, telling her to get out of his store, and said she was not American because of the way she dressed; sad part about this was the people who just sat and watched. At the end of the segment thirteen people stood up for her, six basically applauded and shook the ignorant counter guy’s hand agreeing, and twenty people did absolutely nothing. I understand that this was shot in one of the most racist states, Texas but why should Muslims walk around in fear because of their faith and practicing religion? Nahiya the Muslin woman that this experiment was based off stated that she fears to walk around alone because she has an incident where she was jumped by 5 girls for dressing the way she does. People need to realize a person’s outfit or skin color does not make up a person; it’s

From chapter four, I learned that being a therapist, I have to think a lot before I speak and give advice to clients. Doing this will prevent me from making a client uncomfortable. Another thing the book stated which made me think a lot is the comment about race. It said that race is a social construct, not a scientific or biological fact. It was interesting learning about how race developed into a hierarchically issue. Race and ethnicity are different things and people do not realize the differences between the two.…

Does race and ethnicity play a role in how art is made? What is considered to be Asian American art? These are the questions one would ask in order to better understand the relationship between race and ethnicity and how it ties in with Asian American art. Every piece of artwork has a story, a message expressed to the audiences. These messages may portray more than one influence, but the main influence that inspires the creation of the art is through the artist’s race and ethnicity. Through race and ethnicity, the artist can express their experiences, history, and concerns of Asian American. It may be expressed through music, literature, and even in humor.…

The “American Dream” is an American motto that began in the eighteenth century with the writing of the Declaration of Independence. The American Founding Fathers sought to create the idea of the American Dream by stating in the Declaration of Independence “That all men are created equal.” This statement provides hope and the belief that there is nothing that can limit the opportunity for prosperity and success. However, this is not the reality for all Americans, past and present, due to the race of the individual. Race is not a biological trait, but rather a socially constructed classification of people by their physical appearances. This classification is mainly defined by the pigmentation of an individual’s skin, his hair, and his facial structure. Then again, why must we even classify people into a certain group based on these characteristics? Why must race exist if it has no biological meaning? How can our appearance define who we are in society’s eyes? American Sociologist Peter Berger argues that it is imperative that we ask these types of questions to help develop a sociological consciousness. This consciousness allows us to become aware of all the social differences and inequalities in our culture, especially race. In our society, an individual’s race is indicative of his opportunities and life chances due to the ranking of race our society delegates. Typically, white individuals are seen as the elite and each race subsequently follows. Thus, the white individuals have the most opportunities while other races such as African American, Latino, and Asian have much fewer chances to succeed in life.…

I think it affects everyone, even if it occurs at a subconscious level. I will be the first to admit that I am prejudice: I judge people daily by how they dress, talk, and look. Prejudice has a heavy psychological impact on the ones to whom it is directed at; it shows the ignorance of the person displaying the prejudice; and yes, I believe prejudice can be lessened, but I it will never be eliminated.…

What information about race and ethnicity in the United States has helped you better understand or relate to specific minority groups? In the first week of class when we were asked the question in our journal entry of a subordinate group member defining race and ethnicity, what does the terms race and ethnicity mean to me. After researching that question and getting thorough meaning of race and ethnicity I was able to understand and relate to specific minority group such as African Americans because I am one. Have i learned something new about my own cultural history? It has been found all over the world where acts of violence were taking upon specific groups of people for reasons such as their race, religion and even gender. Although this may not seem the right or ethical thing to do yet some people follow their beliefs rather than what is ethical. This is where hate crimes come into play. In recent years, hate crimes against religious groups, especially Muslims and Arabs have increased and this is blamed by the “War on Terrorism”. It is thought that the “War on Terrorism” and the event of September 11th have placed a permanent picture in the minds of Americans to automatically assume or suspect that any American Muslim or Arab looking individual may be a terrorist and planning another horrific act against the United States of America.…

Every person has their own political beliefs about how things should work and function in our society. That being said I myself am no different, I believe that our society doesn’t function as well as it could because of some several factors. Since everyone has their own opinion, it can lead to controversy and heated debates. If more people took the time to look at both sides of the story instead of jumping to conclusions, we would have a better grasp on the situation at hand.…

When I hear the word “race”, the first thing that I think of is a person’s skin color, facial features and the texture of their hair. Although I am colorblind, I can’t help but to think of this when I hear the word race. This is due to the fact that the majority of the time when we fill out an application or any paperwork of importance the question of race is raised. I’m not sure why it matters, your experience and education seems more important to me. It seems as if some people still want to separate us depending on the color of our skin. Being that there’s so many races mixing, there’s no such thing as a pure race. Race seems to be unimportant to me. Ethnicity is a word that I prefer and enjoy when speaking of culture. Ethnicity makes me think of everybody’s struggle dating back from their ancestors to the present. Where did your ancestors originate? Where did you come from? Ethnicity is ones background and cultural differences. For example just because I am considered black doesn’t mean that I am from Africa; which means that I will be considered an African American. I thought for years that I was an African American till an African man that I was friends with broke it down to me and gave me some knowledge to read. He is considered an African American because he’s from Africa and now resides in America. I am considered to be a black American because I’m from America. This is weird being that my ancestors were American Indians. Your ethnicity is the group that others place you. I do have my personal opinion on all of this and why America still tries to identify us by race. Since my opinion was asked I felt the need to tell the truth on how I feel. Race and ethnicity are important in America because some people in the government still strives for division and don’t want us to come together as one. It seems as if the government gets more powerful when we separate ourselves from each other. If we all were to come together I…

Many people do not know the differences between race and ethnicity. Race is defined by the physical characteristics, while ethnicity is by the nationality or cultural region. I define race as something that separates people. I do not like to even use race to define myself because I begin to be characterize by it. Race is a factor that was used back in the days to make the differences in people. Race made people realize that they are different than the one other person. Race begin to be have a social constructed on people. I have a little sister who is what you call a light skin black girl and I am called a dark skin black girl. People would tell me that my sister is prettier than me because she is light skin. My sister was always called the pretty sister and I was always called the ugly sister. I allow society to tell me whether or not I am a beautiful girl. When society starting comparing to my sister, I began to down myself. I began to uplift people and tell them that they are beautiful. I would tell them to not let anyone to tell that they are not, but I did not believe it for myself. I began to feel that Society made me feel that it is acceptable to be called the ugly girl because my skin color, but in reality it was never okay. I feel that it is never okay to call someone out of something they can’t control. People do not have the choice to decide what race they are going to be in their lifetime. The problem with social constructionist is that they make people’s faults something to always worry about.…

Ethnicity and race has had a big influence on peoples' every day life choices. In some way or another, most people will be judged according to their color of their skin or their ethnic background. We live in a society full of different races and cultures affecting the way we interact with each other, as well as influencing our views on equality and differences among the many different races in our society. Often influential media groups and social standards shape our beliefs, also affecting how we interact with cultures different from our own, and how various groups interact with each other. Race and ethnicity may be defined as a type of grouping or classification based on a persons origin of birth and includes their racial appearance, language, religion and culture.
