Reflections Paper
Comfort and Gods Glory
Ray Kirby
Liberty University

In the decision to discuss two topics included within this reflection paper I have been led to discuss two doctrines that are close to all Christians. The comfort of God and the glory of God are the two doctrines that I have focused on over the last several weeks. The comfort of God has touched me at times over the course of my life however, never as much as it has over the last year. I wish to praise the glory of God as directed within the bible to show how God has worked in my life.
The Comfort of God
Theological Definition The comfort of God can be best represent and defined by 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 which states: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too”. (NIV) However, Webster’s dictionary defines comfort as “to give strength and hope to” and “to ease the grief or trouble of” (Webster’s, 2013)
Biblical Foundation The Bible provides many references to God’s comfort as stated in Psalms 18:2 “The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower”. (NIV) Even though the word comfort isn’t contained in the passage just knowing that God is your strength and rock is enough. Psalms 138:7 states “though I walk in the middle of trouble, you will revive me: you shall stretch forth your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand shall save me”. (NIV)
Practical Application Over the course of my career as a law enforcement officer, I have found myself seeking comfort in some way or another. I have involved myself with discussions with fellow officers and

We all have had moments of tragedy and despair. It is in our darkest hour that many of us pray to God for comfort, I believe he answers our prayers when we are ready. We need to understand that asking God for material things will probably be ignored, that the greatest gifts we receive from God come from what we live and learn. For instance, my life was very difficult in many ways. I came from a home plagued by mental disease and addiction, it was a very lonely existence and I had often prayed for peace and to be loved unconditionally by another person. It did not seem like too much to want from life, however inside me grew resentment and anger. I was not ready to be loved or for a peaceful existence because I had not even loved myself. Over twenty years I lived my life angry at God for not giving me what seemed basic for most people and it consumed me to the point of near death. I saw what I had become, but now I had a child and I did not want her to feel the pain that I felt. If I did not change, it would just be repeating the vicious cycle. A very life altering decision was made and I began to heal from my past, but I still had a long journey ahead. I still felt lost and needed someone to understand. Finally I begged God to show me…

God uses suffering, failure and loss to bless the Christian: The Bible does not promise the Christian that he will have a pain-free life while on earth. This will come later in heaven. Our life here must be lived among the thorns, with sickness, disease, death and a battle with sin. We will suffer at the hands of unmerciful people who will mistreat us. But trials, suffering and sorrow can strengthen our faith, 1 Peter 1:6-9. God may teach you patience by allowing you to face adversity. Even repeated failures teach patience. Pain is sometimes the only way to humble a proud spirit and cause a person to think seriously about the direction of his…

The Bible says “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God” also, God reveals that suffering carries with it a noble purpose: It should help us to grow in brotherly love, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians6:2) I think that when we support each other through suffering we form closer relationships. I believe that suffering is a part of life that needs to be embraced and that for me, I find comfort in knowing God allows suffering to serve a divine purpose. When we return to God it will bring an end to sadness and suffering. I suffer every day with anxiety. It makes me a better person because I know what it’s like to suffer, and because I suffer, I am a more compassionate person to others. I go out of my way to try to lift others in spirit because I know what it feels like to be down. I try to be a wonderful friend because I know how shortcoming in friends can be a letdown, and how having a good friend has kept me safe on bad days. I think sometimes when people don’t suffer they become self-centered and think they are above others. I think it is often when we suffer that we are drawn closer to our families and given a reality check. Suffering helps us to fulfill our potential as children of God (1John…

For example, Christians often pray to God. Prayer is rooted in the belief that God can hear you and is always listening. The tradition of prayer promotes a relationship with God by making one feel as if he is always there for us. The use of prayer has also been known to hasten the recovery of sick and injured patients. Prayer is also linked to the Christians eternal life. Most Christians believe by maintaining a relationship with God, through prayer, guarantees their place in Heaven. Another reason or prayer is comfort. Many people use prayer to help them through difficult times in life. Although hard times seem the most appropriate times for prayer, it is also used as a way to thank God for all he has done and will do in one’s life. Many religions have a specific time for prayer and the thanking of God. Prayer encourages relationships with fellow believers by giving them a common thread in prayer. It also helps believers to express, in words, their closeness with…

    Trials Vs Persecution

Faith can make a real difference for those who go through horrible times of trials and persecution because there is a comfort in knowing that our Creator not only ordained all the days of our life before one came to be (Psalm 139:16), even the hard days. We also can rest assured that we are never alone and the Lord will never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5) and has promised to work all things out for our good (Romans 8:28). When trials and persecution come our way, God promises to give us not only the wisdom that we need (James 1:5), but also promises to bind us our broken heart (Psalm 147:3). Finally, 1 Peter 1:6-7 tells us, “In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds…
