Salon Success Chapter 1 Summary

Mrs. Smith started my second year of cosmetology by torturing me with giving me the Salon Success book. I am not a fan of this book because of the fact that it tells me how to live my life and most of it doesn't even make sense. I also do not like this textbook because it gives its own opinions on what's right and wrong. However, I like how honest and direct the material is presented. I learned something from most chapters, but I especially enjoyed chapter 5.2 “Clientele building” and 7.1 “Defining success.”

Chapter one is based on respect, integrity, and commitment. I really enjoyed reading this chapter because it opened my eyes to a lot. For example there are three elements of respect; self respect, self esteem, and mutual respect. On page 6 it explains that self respect is paying attention to what you like about yourself. I feel that I have more self respect than self esteem. Self respect comes naturally to me because I know the rights and wrongs of the situations I put myself in. On page 13, it
6.1 is about salon experience, while 6.2 is all about service experience. The first part of this chapter is all on ambiance, personalized approach, and staff synergy. I really enjoyed the paragraph on ambiance, because I never knew the word before now and it's nice to think that every place I go, has an ambience of its own, stated on page 168. Something I learned about on page 169 is that anything in the salon environment can affect the ambiance either positively or negatively.

The Salon Success textbook has helped me in many ways to growing as a licensed cosmetologist. For example, learning more on respect, integrity, and commitment. The only thing I did not enjoy about this book is how they told you what is “right” and “wrong” in this profession. For example, the book telling you how you handle stress, instead of giving us ways to handle it. Overall, I enjoyed reading most of these
