Shabbaton Case Study
Objective of the Shabbaton Program

I think the main objective of the shabbaton is to celebrate shabbat in a way that one may not usually do. It gives so many students (and even teachers) a new experience and shows how special this time is. It also helps to form a stronger connection with judaism as the weekend teaches us about the significance of shabbat.

Best part of a shabbaton

There so many parts of a shabbaton that I love, but one in specific would have to be discussion groups and Havdalah. Discussion groups are a way for small groups to get together and talk about a variety of different things that can relate to shabbat, or Judaism in general. It also give the more shy kids a chance to speak up because its in a smaller group! I also

The two programs that I’m most proud of was planning an annual program called Dancing with the Staff, where I got to help choose who participated in it, painted signs and banners, and made sure the program ran smoothly during the night. Another program that I was really excited to plan was a ‘Date Night” style program at the beginning of the summer. This was a really big ice breaker program, where campers were paired up together, they dress up and spend the night together playing games, talking and getting to know each other. I had such a big role in these 2 programs and I’m so happy that I had the chance to do it.

Familiarity with T’fillot and Brachot

Throughout my elementary and middle school experience, I had always been exposed to T’filla. This was not only praying, but learning the actual meaning of the prayer. I have also learnt that there are so many different ways to pray, and it doesn’t have to be just from a Siddur. Knowing so many T’fillot and Brachot help me feel more involved during services on shabbat and allow me to help others who may not know the T’fillot and Brachot.

They have taught me so much about the meaning of shabbat, strengthened my connection with judaism and Israel, create new friendships, and so much more! Being on a shabbaton is being surrounded by a positive atmosphere and a group of people who are all so excited for that weekend! The madrichim were a huge part of the experience. They made me feel welcomed and were excited to teach us and the cheers and traditions that occur on Shabbatons! It was a way to connect with other students who were not in the same grade as me, and it made me feel like I had someone to look up to. The main reason I want to be a madricha is because I want to give other Chanichim the best experience, just like the madrichim I have had in the past, had gave to me. The madrichim play a huge role in the experience, as they are the ones who are leading all the discussions, services and more! I think Shabbatons really enhance your experience at CHAT because you get to spend time with friends and teachers outside of school and you don't have to worry about anything school related for a weekend. I feel like I have the qualities that are requires to be a Madricha. I am out going which I feel is needed during times where everyone is cheering and singing because if they see the Madrichim are outgoing, they would want to be more engaged. I also feel like I am easy to talk to if anyone needs something and I want any fo the chanichim to feel like

It was an amazing feeling to give to the community in that way. I was selected as the master of ceremony for our yearly Veterans Day Assembly this year also. It was an honor to be able to lead the assembly and make sure that the veterans were honored for their true acts of bravery. Also through National Honor Society, I planned a Red Out at a basketball game, a Cardiac Ball, and a 3-on-3 tournament in order to spread awareness and collect donations for the American Heart Association. We ended up raising 2,000 dollars for such a great cause!…

I am a church member and musician at Revival Tabernacle. By being a musician, I find myself working with the talents and ideas of others as we come together on one accord and produce a skilled sound. I am also currently a student at Jones County High School. Being a student, I am a service to other organizations at school by being an usher for Graduation and also the Chorus Department. My recent involvement in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and DECA has enriched my knowledge of the business sector and how we all come together as a society and produce great ideas. In these organizations, I was able to be a holiday helper at local Nursing Homes to bring cheer to the residents. From my participation in these organizations and activities, I learned that it is better to give than receive. I was able to gain experience with dealing with the public and also give people a sense of comfort and love.…

In tenth grade, I went on a missions trip with my church to Mink Lake, which is a camp by the Gunflint Trail in northern Minnesota. During the missions trip, we prepared a camp for the summer. Some of my personal jobs were to help clean out two sheds and reorganize them, haul logs, and trim trees all over the camp. The trip benefitted myself and the other people on the missions trip because we were able to help people have a fun experience at camp over the summer, and we also helped the people running the camp to not have to work so hard to prepare the camp for the summer campers. Another reason it was a good experience for all of us workers is because we did not have our cell phones, so we were able to form new relationships with each other since we were not constantly distracted by our…

My site visit took place on the first of February 2013 I had the privilege of attending the candle lighting ceremony of the Judaism religion. To bring in the day called Shabbat ( a sacred day to the Jewish community) at the Chabad Center of Kendall and Pincrest they lit candles, sang songs, and recited words from the Torah that reminded them of the historical story of Shabbat. The Shabbat is the equivalence to the Christian tradition of the Sabbath, where the religious community stops to rest and ponder on the holy one. This establishment is a well-respected and reputable Chabad Lubavitch branch of the Jewish religion. The synagogue, or as they would prefer to call it, a community center, is not only a holy place to worship and rejoice in the lord, but also an educational center that offers a great variety of services and ceremonies for the entire community both Jewish and non-Jewish. It is located in the Kendall area on 87th avenue and 112th street a residential and tranquil area.…

Being part of the Environmental Club I made sure to do whatever I could to promote environmental safety, how we could reduce the consumption of electricity and water. Knowing that our earth our home is being depleted of its natural resources it worries me that our future generations will not have a peaceful and beautiful environment. We also participated in Relay for Life where we promoted cancer awareness. With the recycle club we also encouraged people to recycle and distributed recycling binds around the school to all the staff members. The yearbook club allowed me to get to know my school better I would interview sports teams and create pages for them in the yearbook. In the Diversity club I was the Vice-President and our members promoted diversity within our school to help our school’s staff and students learn more about people’s different cultures and backgrounds. This required me to listen to others to let them know that I cared about what they were saying and how they felt. With the National Honors Society, I was able to help out with the Greensboro Interactive Resource Center, providing help for the less fortunate.…

I needed to help others to become involved in their school. I enjoyed attending games and other activities. This showed me that school pride was more than wearing your school colors. I was a Falcon! People knew who I was and expected me to act a certain way. Later, I was given the leadership role of cheer co captain my junior year and captain my senior year. This allowed me to develop leadership qualities. I not only was responsible for making sure my squad had information about games, but I was a person they could trust. I was the only four year cheer leader on the squad. I had the knowledge of the program and understood what it felt like to be an underclassman. These unique experience have allowed me to learn compassion. When you have compassion you build life long…

    Jewish Shabbat

The most important of all Jewish holidays is the Sabbath. In Judaism, it is observed as the seventh day of the week and a day of rest (no deliberate work). The Sabbath begins on Friday at sundown and continues until Sundown on Saturday. In Judaism, the origins of this day is found in the Tanakh (the Hebrew Bible) book of B’reshit describing God creating the heavens and the earth in six days, and resting on and sanctifying the seventh. In addition to this belief, the special status of Shabbat as a holy day is found in B’reshit 2:3 of the Tanakh:…
