I receive the educational foundation that I needed for best practice, but also had the opportunity to get hands-on experience through my senior field practicum. As a family advocate intern at Northern Virginia Family Service Early Head Start program, I gained many valuable skills that I found essential for direct-practice social workers. Gaining case management skills and becoming knowledgeable about community resources and public assistance was very gratifying because it meant I could share my knowledge with families who could benefit from it. In addition, preforming intakes and family assessments helped me understand family’s needs, appropriate interventions, and patterns within communities. Furthermore, I gain knowledge on child development and the tools that are necessarily for a strong family unit and children’s well-being. Additionally, I learned how to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team and learned first-hand that in many cases clients need additional support and teamwork is essential to meet their
