In the trolley car problem I would hit the switch to save the 4 people and sacrifice the one because I would not be able to live with myself just by allowing them all to die. At least even though I would be sacrificing one person I would still be able to save the rest of the people.
The reasoning that has allowed me to come up with this decision is based upon my own personal values that I have which is if there is something that I can do some way shape or form that will allow me to make a difference I am willing to do it especially if it is for the greater good to be helpful to someone else. By me just sitting by and watching the trolley car and letting them all die would be something that I would physically be able to do because of the heart that I have. Though I am not a killer I would still weigh the options between the two and come up with one person dying is better the all 5.
When this problem was first introduced I had the same decision to pull the switch to save the four guys opposed to letting them all die. But I can say that my reasoning behind the decision has somewhat changed before I looked at the situation as damage reduction and choosing between the lesser of the two but now I look at the situation as being to take into account the right thing to do and what I would want someone else to do for me if I were in that same situation.

However, I only have the ability to save one at this time. It is during impossible circumstances like these that we should consider the advice of those who came before us. John Stuart Mill was a noted English philosopher during the 19th century who followed a utilitarian approach to such dilemmas. He believed that the right answer was the one which would help the most people. St. Thomas Aquinas was an Italian philosopher who taught us to follow our conscience, to follow our heart and do what we believe is right.…

If we were lookin gat the case in a consequentialist’s point of view, we would still kill Tom to save the four other children. Consequentialism is defined as “a general approach to ethics that maintains that consequences –and only consequences- are what make something morally good or bad” (95.) The consequence or killing Tom would be saving four other children, therefore the ratio would remain 4:1 and the consequences would be desirable. Mill’s explains that some pleasures fall on a higher plane than others. This would be the reason that killing Tom would be okay. One of the highest pleasures, according to Mill is helping others. In this case, Tom is dying, but he dies knowing he did it to help four others live. That in Utilitarianism and Consequentialism would promote the greatest utility, therefore be the greatest choice to make in the…

Foot gives us a scenario just like Rescue 1 but with a slight twist to the situation. In this scenario we are still rushing to go save the same group of five people who are in danger of the threatening ocean tide. However, the one aspect that has changed between the two scenarios is that in Rescue 2, the one individual is trapped on the road. Now hearing this one would could say to just go around him if that’s the case. Foot must have thought the same coincidence so she also decided to throw in the mix that the road we are traveling on is too narrow to be able to go around this individual. Knowing all of this and the new specifications in place, in order to rendezvous with the group of five people, you would have to drive over the one individual becoming what Foot calls the “agent of harm”. In driving over this one individual, you initiate a fatal sequence causing the death of the individual trapped on the road to save five. Foot states “it may be right to allow one person to die in order to save five, although it would not be right to kill him to bring the same good to them” (Foot 818). In this case, it is not permissible to kill the one person trapped on the road. Instead its permissible to save this one individual and let the group of five die since you are not committing a fatal sequence, you are allowing it to…

This particular episode begins with Lee and the rest of the survivors as they begin their quest to find a safe place to prevent them from getting attacked by the walkers. Kenny and Lee are seen walking and searching for supplies in order to keep the other survivors alive. In this episode, I had to make an ethical decision and the only difference I noticed while making this decision it was earlier than expected. The first tough choice that I had to make was to leave the girl to be bitten by the zombies or to just shoot the girl. Just like you Lucas, I chose not to shoot the girl. I did that because killing her would have been the wrong move and also because I figured that shooting her means less time to take the supplies that Kenny and I were…

The Trolley Dilemma is a thought experiment where there is a runaway train and it is heading down the tracks towards five workers you cannot directly do anything to stop the train, but you happen to be standing by a lever that will switch the tracks, only problem is there one man on the other track. And by pulling the lever you will kill him only instead, so you kill one as an alternative to killing five. The other scenario is, imagine you are standing on a bridge seeing all of this happen and you by chance notice a very fat man standing on the bridge with you, he is leaning over the edge and you know that if you…

When applying the ethical theory of utilitarianism to this case, it can be assumed that Jen will again accept the offer from QBank, as this will maximise the good of society. This is because, not only will it benefit her and her family as stated above, it will also benefit the local community. Setting up a branch will be beneficial to QBank’s clients in the area, as it will be easily accessible and convenient because it is located right next to a train station and a major shopping center. Therefore, although Diane and Helen may suffer if Jen accepts the offer, a greater number of people are benefiting in the outcome of…
