Making decisions in life can be difficult and people often rush and act too quickly without taking time to think their actions through. When under pressure to make the right decisions haste comes into play and the impacts are detrimental, as proven in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The main characters in this text ignore many dark signs warning them along the way as they rush decision after decision leading to tragic results. The saying “haste makes waste” means that when action is taken in a hurry there are negative consequences which Romeo and Juliet both struggle with. Their lives take a spin downhill when they become overly eager to be together, are impatient, and act with rashness. For example, after Romeo and Juliet’s instant marriage their lives become filled with doom and tragic losses. It is important to take one day at…

Proverbs and sayings give short and understandable guidance about how we should live our lives. Since they are only a line, they often only show a single way of living, paying no attention to difficulty or subtlety. For that reason, sometimes two proverbs can be seemingly contradictory but both give good advice. While one quote (“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise”) suggests a life that is calm, planned, steady, and controlled, the other (“Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we may die”) suggests a carpe diem approach to life.…

The above quote is an often heard line regarding an individual’s response to the demands of nature. It can be said that self-preservation and security outweigh the need to act independently and freely of the constraints of others. This is but one of the ways one can attempt to balance out the desire to act independently but also with the need for security. The idea of resolving these seemingly irreconcilable needs is brought up in Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, wherein he writes of two main characters who attempt to resolve their need for independence and security. The playwright utilizes character to suggest that in the attempt to reconcile independence and security, it is ultimately the need for self-preservation that takes immediate priority.…

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step” says Martin Luther King Jr. (Finest Quotes, Lift Your Spirit Up, 2010). Sounds simple enough to some, but for many people taking the first step can be quite difficult. In other words, putting off something intentionally that should be done is called procrastinating (Merriam-Webster, 2010). There are lots of reasons that people can’t take that first step for such as having a busy schedule, stress, afraid of failure or wanting complete perfection; because of this, people tend to wait until the last minute to do things, lye to themselves, do other things instead of what needs to be done and avoid making decisions. Actually, waiting until the last minute gives some people just enough pressure to complete their task or time to refresh their minds. Therefore, procrastinating can be a positive thing for some, but for others it can be a barrier that hinders one from accomplishing the simplest-everyday tasks to more long term goals. So for those people that consider procrastination a problem, once you figure out how and why you procrastinate, then you find a solution for your problem.…

“Time is really the only capital that any human being has and the only he can’t afford to lose” (Thomas Jefferson). You can do anything if you have the time and use it properly. When Jefferson says time is something you can’t afford to lose, he means always live in the moment. Don’t worry about the future or else you will lose time. You can’t change the past, you can change the future, you should live in the moment. Be happy right now instead of worrying about the future. What he’s saying is that if you spend too much time worrying, you will lose the time that you have right now.…
