Ari work and its origin

Once adorned by the royalties of the country, on the sheen of silk and the softness of velvet, the designs always would stand out like a peacock on a rainy day. Of Persian motifs enthralling the costumes and wares creating a luster of luxury and elegance, the art of aari embroidery, zari and zardosi has come a long way, since its royalty days.

Ari embroidery is very old and known for its heavy work. It is done with a cobbler's stitch, which needs much skill and practice.
The royal ladies of Kutch who were moved by the Persian motifs like peacock and flowers became great patrons of Ari embroidery.

Rabari Embroidery is the most conspicuous work and available easily. The Kutchi Rabaris employ mirrors of different shapes and sizes.

Applique or Katab is another form of decorative needlework, more pronounced in Saurashtra, it is done with pieces of colored and patterned fabric, which are nicely cut to make the motif and then stitched on to a plain

In the relief Ashurbanipal is highly decorated both in appearance and stature; his head is draped with a crown that has a flower design, which also reoccurs on his tunic from his waist down to the first break. His hair is neatly formed under the crown and his beard is neatly formed denoting his status as someone of power due to its size and style. His left hand is out-stretched grabbing the lions throat while his right hand holding a sword thrusting it into the lions abdomen. One would also notice the carved detail in his right hand showing the forearms muscles while holding the hilt of the sword. Also in his left arm he is holding a bow around his shoulders. Ashurbanipal’s upper portion of his tunic is detailed with horizontal and vertical lines which make it look like it is some form of stippling. The lower portion of his tunic is detailed with geometric flower shapes and has seven breaks total. The other six breaks have circular shapes or diagonal lines. His calves are also detailed with some form of hatched texture perhaps some form of chainmail. This figure is wearing some form of footwear that is bound by threads wrapped around his ankle to his calves.…

    Persian Miniature Painting

    • 2293 Words
    • 10 Pages

This miniature is a beautiful example of later Persian book painting that displays adaptations of the classical style to suit a more global viewership in the late 19th- early 20th century, the era of British colonialism (see figure 2). This scene depicts the beginning of the Kuza Nama (verses 59 through 68) from the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, initially written by Omar Khayyam, a famous 12th century Sufi poet. The painting is composed of a uniform border, enclosing a relatively broader field comprising a central medallion and two smaller medallions aligned along a longitudinal axis. The central medallion (see figure 4) portrays a male potter in his house or workshop, at his wheel accompanied by three male assistants, all engaged in activities related to creating earthen pottery. This scene is overlooked by a bearded male figure, presumably a depiction of the poet (Khayyam) himself. The background of the central medallion visually describes flat structural and architectural spaces with a textile aesthetic i.e. use of interwoven geometric shapes and saturated colors to dissolve the distinction between positive and negative space, and create a flat, two dimensional tapestry- like viewing experience. The center of this medallion contains images that might indicate the artist’s desire to create the illusion of depth by portraying a background setting. A back wall with a separated framed space is shown, which could be either another painting or a window showing a rocky landscape, with some sparse grasses and a large blossoming tree. The smaller medallions at the top and bottom contain the image of a snow leopard attacking a gazelle, very similar to the “preying lion” (see figure 3) motif that has been…

Traditional Uzbek women’s suit consists of plain khan-atlas tunic-dress and wide trousers. Holiday garments were made of satin fabric richly embroidered with golden thread. Women’s headdress consists of three elements: a skull-cap, kerchief and turban. An essential part of traditional holiday garments of Uzbek women are gold and silver jewellery: earrings, bracelets, necklaces. Surkhandarya women most of all prefer the colors of red nuance as a symbol of well-being. The embroidery pattern was chosen not by chance, it always had magic or practical function. One could judge about the owner’s social status by the patterns, though sometimes they bear other meanings. For instance, repeating geometrical pattern on the braiding was a something like an amulet Clothing of black or dark…
