La Raza Student Cultural Organization played a vital role on the University of Minnesota campus from 1972-2010. The student-led group of Chicano and Latino students from colleges in the Twin Cities promotes greater historical, political, and cultural awareness concerning the Latino community through cultural and educational programs and events. Each year nearly all student groups submit a request to receive student service fees to fund their various events and activities. These formal requests are multi-page documents that describe all activities and events for which the funds will be used. In this paper, I analyze a Student Fees Request from 1999-2000 along with a La Raza event flyer from September 1999 to paint a picture of the La Raza Student…

The U.S had a clear and valid reason on why they needed to move into Mexico. Mexico, essentially, invited Americans to live in the province of Texas, which turned out to be a bad idea in the end. So, was the United States justified in going to war with Mexico? The answer to that question would be yes, the U.S was justified in going to war with Mexico because their population was overgrowing and they needed more land, their economic depressions made people want to live in frontier areas, and living in frontier areas would create many new opportunities for commerce and self-advancement.…

So the concert I went to go see was right here on the Santa Fe campus in the Fine Arts Hall Theatre or building FA. So the performers for this concerts were all students from Santa Fe and there were two different music classes to perform there, it was the Santa Fe wind ensemble, and the Santa Fe hand-drummers were the performers at this concert. So the concert was broken in to two sections the first consisting of a group of hand-drummers playing all different types of drums and styles from African to Mediterranean, then the second half was the wind ensemble. The wind ensemble had lots of instruments there was marimbas, percussion, triangle, tubas, trombones, euphonium, French horns, trumpets, clarinets, bass clarinets, flutes, piccolo, oboe,…

    Mexico Vs Cuba

    • 2 Pages

Mexico and Cuba are two primary Spanish speaking nations with rich cultures. These two countries are approximately 1500 miles in distance from each other, and historically the relationship has been good until recent years. During the revolution of Cuba, many Cubans went to Mexico to seek refuge, which Mexico did oblige. The relationship became strained when Fidel Castro made comments about Mexico, and the Cold War did not make things any better. Cuba’s influence came from Russia and its communist ideology, whereas Mexico’s influence came from the United States and its free world ideology. As of now the two are working toward a better relationship, and both are members of the Association of Caribbean States and other organizations.…

    Mexico : New Spain

    • 7 Pages

From 1519, the Spaniards absorbed the native peoples into Spain's vast colonial empire. For three centuries Mexico was just another kingdom (the New Spain) of the Spanish Empire, during which time its indigenous population fell by more than half and was partially replaced by Spaniards and the now predominant Mestizos or mixture of Indigenous and Spanish populations. It was also then that the current Spanish-speaking, Catholic and Westernized Mexican culture was born. After a protracted struggle Mexico declared its independence from Spain in 1810. In 1846, the Mexican American War broke out, ending two years later with Mexico ceding almost half of its territory to the United States. Later in the 19th century, France invaded Mexico (1861) and set Maximilian I on the Mexican throne, which lasted until 1867. A half-century of economic stagnation and political chaos ended as Porfirio Díaz held power and promoted order and the modernization of the society and economy. Mexico's infrastructure was modernized by a strong, stable central government. Increased tax revenues and better administration brought dramatic improvements in public safety, public…

There are three things that are certain to occur in Oklahoma during the spring. One being bad weather, the second is the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon and the third being the start of festival and fair season. Oklahoma City has festivals to celebrate the arts, music, and foods that are unique to Oklahoma. The City of Guthrie devotes a whole weekend to the Land Run of 1889 with “89er Days Celebration” and in Bartlesville you will be transported back to Indian Territory of the 1820s during the “Spring Mountain Man Encampment”. There is even a fair solely dedicated to peaches in Stratford and the City of Norman will host its annual “Medieval Fair”. This is the 41st year the city will host the fair. It has grown to be the state’s largest…

    Mexican Revolution

    • 903 Words

I believe the Mexican revolution of the 1910s was a war of the people, against the harsh rule of dictatorships. The role of Mexico’s leader quickly changed hands from Porfirio Diaz (1876-1911), to Francisco I. Madero (1911-1913), to Victoriano Huerta (1913-1914), and finally to Venustiano Carranza (1914-1920). It all started due to Diaz and his hunger for power and unwillingness to let go of it; he went as far as blaming the people by claiming the indigenous and mixed people were “practically subhuman, degenerate, apathetic, irresponsible, lazy, treacherous, superstitious… destined to be a slave race.” (Brenner, 1984, p. 9) Throughout next ten years revolutionaries, and their constructed armies, fought to free Mexico from foreign control and for the rights of the middle and peasant classes.…
