Mr. Jones is based on Tsar Nicholas II. Mr. Jones drinks heavily and does not treat the animals well; they suffer because of his fondness for excess, much as the Russian lower class suffered under the Tsars. However, it is important to realize that there are fundamental differences between Tsar Nicholas II and Mr. Jones. The animals do not assassinate Jones, so he remains a threat to them and reappears throughout the novel in ways that threaten the farm. More importantly, Squealer is able to use the threat of a possible return by Mr. Jones as a way of keeping the animals committed to Animal Farm, even when it fails to live up to the animals’ expectations.
