Upon reading the poem, imagery can be found throughout the entire poem. For example, in the first two lines you can imagine a doll being put away like a dead child in a chest, you cannot bring a dead child back to life. This is the burial of her childhood only to keep her memories and carry them with her for the rest of her life. Also, the second to last line where she is “wound,” twisted, “like the guts of a clock,” referring to her stomach. She feels a sense of anxiety here. This is her final emotion to conclude the poem. She fears growing up because of the responsibilities she will have to take on, the shame she felt when her period started, will…

She begins the poem with a neutral tone. In the last two lines of the first stanza, she introduces complication when the young girl goes through puberty and the outcome is less than delightful. Here the tone is resentful, that anything less than perfect is flawed. The second stanza begins back in the neutral tone, but not as neutral. The stanza begins with a list of qualities that the girl has, which is everything a "normal" happy girl could have; yet she still did not meet the norms of society. Then the tone changes in the last two lines to express a sense of frustration as the girl feel the need to go through life apologizing for her image. She was not what society expected a girl to look like and she slowly became a victim of society's expectations. The third stanza is full of aggravation and frustration. The girl is fed up with her image and decides to have plastic surgery done to her nose and her legs. She then dies but ultimately achieves a happy ending of finally being accepted by society. Through tone, Piercy helped the reader understand the meaning of the poem.…

The poem “She Walks in Beauty” perfectly represents how his feelings and experiences in real life reflected his writings. The poem title immediately captures the attention of the reader and makes them think of a gorgeous lady; almost goddess-like. We can also infer that Lord Byron greatly admires the lady he is speaking of by the way that he phrases the words like a direct statement from him to the reader. Assuredly, he goes into careful detail about how she is beautiful and her eyes are starry as well as dreamy. Furthermore, he explains how insects and even the sunlight is lucky to be able to be on her skin and in her presence (Marshell). Byron best illustrated just how perfect she was by using many different types of figurative language. For instance, he used alliteration, like in lines eleven through twelve where he says “Where thoughts serenely sweet his express, how pure, how dear their dwelling-place.”, to enhance his compassion and make the poem flow smoothly (Marshell). Unquestionably, he uses this figure of speech to compare the easiness of speaking the lines to the way that his love is easy and patient for her. Additionally, Byron uses a rhyme scheme to create a rhythm for the reader which compares to the smoothness of love. Love is not rigid and stern; it is smooth and has a definite rhythm that always stays on beat, even when things get tough (Marshell). Byron’s attitude that he…

Half of the poem is about the relationship between the father and daughter, while the other is about her surroundings and the scenery. The father starts telling the daughter what he feels as he is dying. The girl responds sarcastically, I said I was glad for him, that he was lucky (Gluck 319). Lord Byron connects two pairs of motifs in “She Walks in Beauty” to establish the theme. One motif is dark and light while the other is inner and outer beauty. Throughout the poem he combines the negative and positive things of a woman and creates a perfect whole (“Lord”). “She walks in beauty, like the night/ Of cloudless climes and starry skies;”(1-2) These first two lines combine night with stars to illustrate that without stars the night would be a black void, but together, they illustrate a shimmering sky. “And all that’s best of dark and bright/ Meet in her aspect and her eyes:/ Thus mellow’d to that tender light”(3-5) Here two opposing forces meet in this woman to create a mellowed whole (“She”). This ties back to the theme because the inner and outer beauty of the woman act as positive reflections of each other as the outcome of the balance in between dark and light. “The smiles that win, the tints that glow.” (15) The woman has a tender aspect and a glowing smile, both of which are attractive outer beauties. “A mind at peace with all below,/ A heart whose love is…
