1.05 – DESIGNING YOUR OWN EXPERIMENT Lesson Organizer
Use this document to help you design your experiment about one of the scenarios from the activity. Copy and paste the template then insert your information for each of the steps of the scientific method.

Scenario Topic: _The Effect of Captivity on Marine Mammals’ Health.

Problem
(2 Points) Does captivity affect the overall health of marine mammals?
Research
(2 Points) 1. The habitat, activities, diet, and behavior of marine mammals in the wild.
2. The habitat, activities, diet, and behavior of marine mammals in captivity.

Hypothesis
(4 Points) If a marine mammal is raised in captivity, then it may be healthier than a wild marine mammal but it may have behavioral problems.

Procedure
(4 Points) 1. Set up sampling area, in both wild and captive areas.
2. Tag and assess health of marine mammals in both areas; try to assess young mammals.
3. Monitor and assess activities, behavior, and diet.
4. Keep detailed records of activity.
5. Continue to monitor subjects for at least 1 year.
6. Assess the health of animals.

Analysis
(4 Points)

• Compare the behavior wild animals versus the ones in captivity
• Compare the activities wild animals versus the ones in captivity
• Compare the weight wild animals versus the ones in captivity
• Compare the overall health of wild animals versus the ones in captivity.
Conclusion
(2 Points) My results supported my hypothesis. The mammals in captivity were healthier because they had cleaner food and had veterinarians to take care of them. When the mammals were placed around other animals they acted nervous and aggressive due to the lack of being around other

The animals in captivity appeared to be healthier and friendly to their tank mates. They were fed organic krill and were fed regularly, but were very nervous and slightly hostile to outside animals once they were exposed. The animals that were not in captivity fed on their own time but were not necessarily unhealthy. They were not hostile to other mammals and peacefully coexisted with other mammals in the ocean.…

There have been several investigations into their inhumane practices. Tragically, Sea World is responsible for thirty-six unnatural orca deaths since 1971 (“Lives Stolen”). Some of the causes include diseases, stillbirth complications, and infections (“Lives Stolen”). None of these orcas died from old age. All these deaths occurred due to conditions of their captivity. Wild orcas have an average lifespan of thirty to fifty years, but in captivity the oldest orca was only twenty-six years old (“Lives Stolen”). These horrors only accounts for one species out of 6,126 species housed in all zoos (“Zoo Statistics”). Zoos are not only unsafe for animals, but also for humans. Over the past twenty-six years, 256 injuries have occurred from animal attacks (Romain). Of those injuries, thirty-three deaths have been reported (Romain). The injuries and deaths are of both the animal trainers and audience. Zoos practice an unmoral act to reduce attacks, they force antipsychotic medication down the throats of those animals to keep them more docile. Medication is not ethical, instead, animals should remain in their natural habitats, not pinned up in close proximity to people. Since animals are not in their natural homes, they perform unnatural habits such as self-abuse, pacing, swaying, boredom, and stress-induced behavior. Unlike in the zoo, animals out in…

For many years people have debated whether zoos are bad or good. There is the debate about animal cruelty to some extent because the animals are locked up in a cage where they have no freedom. And the other one is how animals in captivity is a good cause due to the dangers that are present in the wild now in days. These two points are an endless debate in which both sides are equivalent to each other. Yet I strongly believe that animals in captivity have more chance of survival than if they were released back into the wild.…

The second reason why marine theme parks should be banned is because it deteriorates the health of the animals. According to (Mooney 1998) captivity provokes, demoralizes and denies the instincts that characterize the animals from who they truly are. Therefore it is safe to conclude that physiology wise, confinement triggers flight or fight responses that pilots chronic stress. This can cause quashed reproductive cycles and immune responses and also minimized growth and body weight (Morgan & Tromborg 2006). Subsequently, dorsal fins of captive killer whales appears to bend drastically and not stay upright as compared to their counterparts in the wild. Approximately only 1% of killer whales in the wild are estimated to suffer from dorsal…

Even though the animals are fed everything they need, and, if they get a disease, the zookeepers can help them; some of the animals still have a much lower life expectancy in the zoo. An example is the whale shark which can live at least 70 years, only can lives for 3 years in the zoo. This is because animals are often more stressed and are unable to do usual things that wild animals can do in the wild.…

As many people know, having wild animals as pets is becoming more popular, but should not be taken in. Wild animals like lions, tigers and bears are not considered to be good house pets like a dog or a cat (which are considered domestics animals). These type of animals have needs that can easily be met by there owners, whereas wild animals are used to running free and not being contained within an environment. By containing these types of animals often may cause them to "develop lifelong health and behavior problem as a result of being kept in unsuitable condition and being fed proper diet"(Volunteers for Wildlife). Most of the people that have decided to taken in these types of animals begin to feel overwhelmed with these types of animals and are unable to provide the correct care that is required for them, so why do they bother to take them in the first place?…
