1.1 Explain The Importance Of Assessment In Research
Assessment can be defined as a way of finding out if learning has taken place’ (Gravells). Assessment enables learners to provide an opportunity to share what they have learnt, and what learners may need to develop. It encourages practitioners to be reflective and to continually develop not only the learners within the classroom, but also as professional practitioners themselves. As stated by Gravells, the principles of assessment relate to how the assessment process is put into practice. This provides learners with an assessment that will have a positive impact on their learning experience and something that they can apply while working in the future. This will also ensure that learners are engaged with the assessment as they will see that it is something more than just an assessment and something that will positively impact their future career. The assessor shall ensure that assessments remain current to align with new technologies and current affairs. The assessor shall be responsible for communicating assessment requirements to learners (Gravells, p. 51). This will ensure that the learning criteria are clearly illustrated so that learners understand the assignment and how they can achieve the grade they desire. The assessor shall hold reviews frequently of learners' work (examples) to ensure that learners understand requirements and standards so that they do not deviate too far from the criteria of the course. This ensures that the learner has the knowledge on how they can progress and improve further. The assessor shall carry out assessments to learners to assess their knowledge and how much they have learnt. This allows learners to demonstrate the knowledge they have gained and how they can apply it to real life work scenarios. This ensures that the assessor is making decisions to improve the assessment period. The assessor is responsible for recording the assessment process and decisions to ensure there is an audit trail of the assessment process being carried out. An example of this is the assessor using a sample plan to request a set percentage of assessments. This allows for a paper trail (log) to see what assessments have been requested and then reviewed to ensure that the assessments requested by the assessor have actually been provided for assessment. The assessor shall provide feedback to learners on work that has been submitted. This will improve learners' self-esteem and provide confidence in themselves. It is important that feedback is provided in a timely manner to allow learners to utilise the feedback on assessments running concurrently with the assessment in question to further develop their own learning experience. This will allow the learner to develop their work, but also build confidence and knowledge in what they have achieved. The assessor shall take part in standardisation processes with the vocational team to ensure that different subjects are at the same standard. This ensures that the assessments across the organisation are consistent in terms of quality. This also gives a fair opportunity for all departments to receive the same guidance and feedback to improve results. The
