Age 3 – 4
Physical: Children aged between 3 and 4 make a massive stride in their development; they become physically stronger. They start to develop more body co-ordination with their gross motor skills. For example, they will become more confident with running. Learning to improve their movements more skilfully will also occur. At this age their fine motor skills will also develop as they learn how to complete more complex tasks by using their manipulative skills. By this age they should be able to walk upstairs on alternative feet.
Communication: These skills will also progress really quickly during this age. A child’s vocabulary at this age will expand and they will continuously ask questions. According to Stearns J and Walsh M, ‘They will also be able to communicate using more complex sentences that are mostly grammatically correct.’
Intellectual/cognitive: By the age of 5 and 6 children should have the ability to count and do simple calculations, maybe with the help of adults. Reading and writing should play a massive part in their lives at this age.
Social, emotional and behavioural: Children should be able to separate from their parents at this age; being able to do things by themselves should be promoted to them. For example, putting their own coat on without adult help. At this age children should have some friendship preferences. Friends are important to children at this age; having overnight stays or having a friend over for tea is quite common and children this age love it.
Moral: By this age children should generally be keen to use and understand rules. They should also know the difference between ‘fair’ and ‘unfair’.
