APUSH Era of Reform Assignment
● Explain what was the 2nd Great Awakening, and then explain the impact this movement had on the era of reform.
○ The 2nd Great Awakening was the second religious revival movement of the United States but this time instead of inciting fear into the hearts of the people to convert men and women into Christianity, a new idea was thought up and many people were attracted to it. The doing of good, aiding others and by being Christian you will be forgiven of your sins if you confess. This new ideology began at around the 1790’s and began getting mass popularity near the 1800’s, at 1820’s large populations were gathering and preaching solely for the reason of religion, and during the
1840’s the 2nd Great Awakening was at its’ most effective.
○ The 2nd Great Awakening served to affect the Era of Reform by giving the people in this Antebellum period new ideas. These ideas would soon cause change and revolution in our country. Examples include Women’s
Rights, Temperance, and the idea of eradicating slavery. These ideas paved a way for the future America allowing for women to have equal rights as men (such as voting and equality). Temperance ideals also aided in the ban of alcohol and declaring it unhealthy so that order and and family would not be harmed. Last but not least, the abolition movement
pushed the thought of abolishing slavery once and for all in the United
States. This would soon lead to the Civil War (a drastic measure executed because of the disagreeing of the states), which is why the 2nd Great
Awakening was such a heavy impact to the nation and to the era of reform. It gave Americans the want to change and the effects were national and permanently embedded into our nation’s history.
