The
Department of Education is strongly committed tosupport student health and well-being through its curriculumin schools and a range of initiatives that offeropportunities that promote physically fit individuals wholove eating healthy food. Schools are encouraged toimplement comprehensive health and well-being programs, including food and nutrition education. The establishment and operation of a school canteen isimportant in developing love and interest in buyingnutritious and healthy food among students, faculty and theschool personnel, making it possible for them to enjoynutritious and healthy food at affordable prices during theschool day. The canteen should also provide a variety offoods and dishes that enhance the skills and knowledgelearnt in the classroom about food and nutritionRecognizing the importance of eating the right kind offood in children's growth and development, many schoolstoday accept food services as an integral part of the schoolprogram. Canteen operation can be considered one of the
2 auxiliary services of the school. Although, a classroomteacher or a hired private person often handles theoperation, it is still considered as an important componentof school administration. Hence, greater effort must beexerted in its operation. It is imperative therefore, thatthe child who spends the greater part of his/her wakinghours in school be given food that are nutritious andeconomical. There are plenty of students with meager allowance forsnacks in the public schools, therefore it is necessary thatdaily foods served in the school canteen are assured to bewithin the mean of the children. Considerations are given tothe nutritive value of the food items being served to them. However, there are other factors in the process which arenot given attention which may adversely affect the school’stotal development program especially if the canteen is beingmanaged privately by a group or an individual.
