Even though I am soft spoken and reserved, I can still rise up as a leader and communicate effectively with others. For instance, during group projects, I know when to take action and making sure that everyone stays focused and does their portion. In addition, while I am volunteering at Beaumont Hospital, I am able to demonstrate responsibility because if there is an issue at hand, the other volunteer looks at me to solve the problem.
2. Complete the following statement as clearly and directly as you can: “I am especially proud of the following achievement….”
I am especially proud of my completion from a Harvard course at the age of 15. From keeping up with undergraduate students, spending hours on homework, being on my own for the first time, and the overall challenges that come with accommodating to a new environment, I was able to adapt and thrive in my situation. I learned to be more confident and independent from being alone for the first time.
3. Mention any factors that have come up during your high school career which you feel have put you at a disadvantage.

pain which led me to bounce from doctor to doctor, visit multiple hospitals, experience numerous procedures and tests including surgery. This ultimately led to the diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. My medical condition has caused me to miss numerous school days, but I have never once missed an assignment. I have been able to work past the obstacles and put my education first as I continue to try and expand my knowledge.
4. Do you feel you present grades are a fair representation of your academic ability? If not, discuss.
I do not believe that my grades fully represent my academic ability. While I have worked hard to not let my medical condition stop me from achieving the grades I want, there have been times were I was not able to study for exams because of the pain and lack of time due to the multiple weekly appointments.
5. What goals have you set for yourself and what are you presently doing to achieve them?
My goal has always been to put my best effort into ensuring that I get the most out of my education. I have always motivated myself to go above and beyond on any assignment I am given. I have pushed myself to take rigorous courses in order to increase my college readiness.
6. What activities have you pursued and to what extend? Mention any offices you have held and awards won. Tell what you gained from this experience.
I am an active member of Project Lead and National Honors Society. My experience in both clubs helped me realize that volunteering can have a valuable and positive affect on people, communities and society in general. Volunteering also helps me feel like I am contributing to the community.
7. In what community activities have you participated?
I have helped tutor at the Boys and Girls Club, managed the cash register at Ethnic Fair, set up for the track meet at Athens, assisted with Curriculum Night and College Night at Athens, supervised children during parent-teacher conferences at Costello Elementary, and assisted the elderly in Senior Bingo.
8. Explain your personal contribution to the high school community.
I try to maintain a positive role and cheer my school on. I also contribute by my giving my time and help at volunteer events hosted at Athens. In addition, I like to take the time to help and motivate peers by either giving advise or tutoring them on a certain topic discussed in class.
9. What are your hobbies?
My hobbies include reading, playing basketball and swimming in my free time, and traveling over the summer. I love exploring new places out of state such as Greece, Italy, and Albania. I also enjoyed sightseeing Boston and Cambridge after I had completed all my homework during my summer at Harvard. Diversity is very important to me and I want to continue to learn from and experience different cultures.
10. Describe any independent study or special programs/projects in which you have engaged (science, drama, music – serious extra work in a subject.)
Every time I go to Albania, I volunteer at a free clinic. Some of the jobs I do are measuring people’s blood pressure and blood sugar levels. In addition, I spent the summer of 2016 studying General Chemistry at Harvard University, earning eight college credits.
11. Describe any work experience you have had ‐ paid or unpaid. Describe your responsibilities, dates of employment, average hours per week, etc.
I have been volunteering at Beaumont Hospital for five hours, every Tuesday since January 2017. My responsibilities include organizing communication between patients and staff, delivered items from the hospital gift shop to the patients, handled the cash register and phone orders, and dropping money off in cash box at the end of shift
12. Describe your summer experiences and what you gained from them:
1. After freshman year: I went to Albania for two month and was able to volunteer at a free clinic. Even though I was not saving lives, this experience helped me realize that even small contributions can have an effect on the lives of others.
2. After sophomore year: I spent the summer learning General Chemistry at Harvard University. I was able to fully experience life at college and also become independent and confident in my own actions as it was the first time I was on my own.
3. After junior year: This will travel to Albania and stay for two months. I plan to volunteer again at the free clinic and to contribute in any way I can.
13. Who are two Athens teachers to whom your counselor might go for further reference?
One of the teachers I would ask for a recommendation would be Ms.
Nagi. The reason is because I feel that I have grown and shown improvement in her English class. Through the help of Ms.Nagi, I was able to realize what elements my essays were lacking and how to improve them. Her class helped me to develop a distinguished voice and clarity in my writing. Another that teacher I would ask for recommendation would be Ms. Moss. The reason is because I demonstrated a passion and understanding of chemistry. I devoted many hours to expanding my knowledge on the topics we discussed in class so that I was prepared for any question thrown my way. She also helped to further push my interest in chemistry and motivate me to continue pursuing the
subject.
14. Where will you apply/have you applied to college?
I plan to apply to the direct medical program that Northwestern offers, which consists of a three years’ undergraduate program and then direct admission into their medical school. However, my target school is the University of Michigan. I also plan to apply to Wayne State, the University of Chicago, and the University of Pennsylvania. They offer amazing research opportunities for pre-medicine students. These opportunities introduce students to the various fields of research, help identify career interests, help students develop critical thinking and problem solving skills, and encourage students to think in innovated ways. In addition, these colleges offer immense volunteering opportunities not only in the United States but also in other countries. I plan to heavily involve myself in volunteering because it presents a proactive way of doing something to make beneficially changes to the world.
15. What is your intended major?
I intend to major in either chemistry and minor in sociology.
16. How did you become interested in this major?
My time at Harvard helped influenced me to choose chemistry as my major. The reason is because I really enjoyed the course and the laboratory experience. I would also like to minor in sociology because it have direct relevance to everyday life. Sociology offers an in-depth look into the complexities society and the relationship between individuals and the cultural world.
17. What are your intended career plans?
Having to live with intense abdominal pain for the past four years influenced me to want to become General Surgeon, which is a specialty that focuses on abdominal contents. Being in a hospital setting due to my condition and meeting some amazing doctors inspired me to want to pursue a career in medicine.
