I arrived at 7:57 on January 8, 1999, and the weather was below freezing and snowy. For my mother, giving birth was an occurrence that she never intended to endure. Before my mother had me at the age of thirty nine, she went through multiple abortions. She had never wanted kids, but my father convinced her to…

Many researchers have studied attachment; however, John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth are the researchers responsible for the origination of the attachment theory, therefore also becoming catalysts for the research of attachment in the late eighteenth century. Furthermore, as described in Berger, the attachment theory assesses the behaviors associated with four identified types of infant attachment. These four types include secure, insecure-resistant/ambivalent, insecure avoidant, and disorganized attachment. Berger defines each of these types as follows: securely…

Based on these observations, Ainsworth concluded that there were three major styles of attachment: secure attachment, ambivalent-insecure attachment, and avoidant-insecure attachment. Researchers Main and Solomon (1986) added a fourth attachment style known as disorganized-insecure attachment. Numerous studies have supported Ainsworth's conclusions and additional research has revealed that these early attachment styles can help predict behaviours later in life.…

July 14th, 1931. I lie in my deathbed at 10:49 pm, thinking. It seems like just yesterday I was only five, with my whole life ahead of me. I remember my mother told me stories while I sat on her lap. She would make hot chocolate and I would listen to her talk. My favorite story always started the same way. On September 2nd, 1903, the day I was born. My mom went into labor a month earlier than expected, so it was a good thing that they already bought baby supplies. The only problem was my parents thought I was going to be a girl. My mother would laugh every time she spoke of this, but she always assured me afterwards that they both love me all the same, no matter who I turned out to be. They named me Lawrence Exeter, after my father. This was the last and only memory I have of my mom before she left us.…
