One of the salient topics of Butler's essay is the concept of identity formation and the subversive politics therein. She begins with an assessment of the creation of non-self-initiated identity, an action that places meaning onto people that naturally could not exist. Butler uses the example of police action to illustrate the interpolative nature of addressing via the notion of "the reprimand", In essence, we are witnessing the linguistic creation of identity. The subject did not exist before the address; it was the act of addressing that created their new status. To put it simply, they are a subject because they are a subject.…

People call out Hitler and Stalin and criticise them for murdering millions of people, yet we know nothing of King Leopold II of Belgium. He “owned” the Congo and during his reign he murdered of 10 million people in the Congo, yet we know nothing about this. Even today we are facing the problems that people like to gloss over due to systematic racism and white supremacy. POC are murdered by police daily, from Emmett Till, to Michael Brown, racism has always been a problem and it will continue to be a problem. Mainstream coverage in American help add to this problem by spouting out whatever ‘facts’ they can without finding out the actual facts. In Germany, any acts that relate back to the Nazi’s is illegal, however in America the KKK is still allowed to come together for a simple fact; Germany is ashamed about what they did, America is proud of…

Social media and the news always tries to pick a side and it is hard to tell what is the truth and what is a lie. The United States has hidden a lot of information from the public and it has changed the way people look at things, especially the government. People try and expose the faults in America’s democracy but it is hard because while people have the freedom of speech and press, they still are limited to things that go against what the public should and shouldn’t hear. Social justice figures are important because they stand for a cause. They want to make the world a better place with ideals that fit a lot of people’s needs. While things have changed over the past century, issues that were a problem back then, are still a problem now. People face discrimination, people face the unknown, and people face unsuppressed power within powerful corporations. In the end, the American people will stand for what they believe, even when most people will agree that it is not right or just. Something that should change is how people look at American history. America is seen as a model country with its motto, “land of the free, home of the brave.” Our history is praised for the good deeds of the people who rose against the evil and injustice in America and yet in today’s world, people are still discriminated against, people are still treated poorly, and people are still seen as underprivileged and poor. Our history has…

As an American citizen, I consider it important to have an understanding of our countries history. Having knowledge is beneficial for avoiding future mistakes. We are aware that trends come and go. There will always be a level of social injustice in this country. It still occurs and we see this by turning on the news. Society tends to stereotype different cultures instead of viewing that person individually. We are all guilty of this, at some level. As a culture, we need to be aware and cautious of misinformation, which can be dangerous.…

He agrees that identity is a bundle of memories or perceptions; meaning that they all interconnect; or that these perceptions “succeed each other with an inconceivable rapidity, and are in a perpetual flux and movement” (2). It is hard to maintain and to say that one is exactly in that personality forever because he is always changing…

In particular is television. Some shows glamourize these ideas of African Americans being thuggish, violent, loud, rude, and uneducated. These portrayals create lasting impressions. Images such as these influence and affect the African-American youth. Sometimes they even take pride in these depictions. There is rarely an effort to portray African-American as successful human beings in films or on television. So to me most Americans don’t really know the true African-Americans…

American is a nation with few years of existence but with as much conflict within its borders as compared to other countries in the world. America’s founding and growth to power was done with the intent of white dominance, never intending for those who did much of the labor that kept the economy afloat-the enslaved black people. America’s hierarchy of blacks having nothing and no chance to become anything more was shaken with the Emancipation Proclamation and ensuing 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, which intended for blacks and other minorities to have the same rights as their white counterparts who had held all the power. Resentment grew from the former slave states as the people they formerly owned began to get involved in politics and better…

America is the land of opportunity with multiple cultures and ethnicities, for years America has been associated with freedom and expression, however this has not always been the case. Since the birth of the nation there has been oppression in America which began with the enslavement of millions of African-American slaves in the 17th century. Slave trade became the economic foundation of America, this was especially true in the South where the economy became dependent of slave labor. This practice of slavery lasted in America for over 200 years until about the mid-19th century, around this period there was expansion of the nation westward, as well as a growing abolition movement in the North. The abolition movement brought to light that the…

Faith and identity are intertwined in many ways because a persons’ identity is constructed through their many positive and negative experiences. The foundation that ties the experiences together and transforms them into a personal identity is faith. Arabian Nights and Days by Naguib Mahfouz displays how identity is affected by faith through Shrahrzad, Gamasa al-Bulti, and the Genies, by showing how each character lives and how their fate is affected by having faith, or having no faith.…

Within my personal experience, I have found the average human being to feel uncomfortable talking about any difficulties regarding race or oppression. Most individuals would rather not talk about race or oppression at all. I have began to reminisce on my child hood and have became aware that there was never much conversation regarding race or oppression. I look back and find it amazing that this was never an issue discussed being how it continues to be a major issue in our society. The reason I feel like this was never addressed is because people including my family, decided that pushing issues of race and oppression aside is the best choice. From a young age in America we are taught that we shouldn't comment on people’s race so that results in individuals feeling as if they should never talk about these…

Identity is something human beings hold dear. Humans are very complex beings and it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what makes up who a person is or can be. Now, the most common generalizations as to what makes up an identity are: personality, likes, dislikes, experience(s), religion, soul, memories and beliefs. A physical form isn’t mentioned; because the body is a temporary thing. A body doesn’t necessarily mean that it is part of the identity since; what will last forever in not the body but the impact left by personality or ideas, for they are everlasting.…
