We have states so that the general public can be protected from external, as well as internal threats. States have armies to protect citizens from other countries who might invade or who pose some other sort of threat. States also have some sort of police force to protect citizens from criminals who wish to do them some kind of harm. The social contract theory posits that people give up certain freedoms to the state in order to be protected physically from threats as well as to have their remaining rights be properly protected. Additionally, states have judiciaries that interpret and apply the laws of the state. There is also a system of taxation that is used to fund all of these institutions, as well as fund a social welfare system.

Assimilationist policies demand that immigrants conform to the host country’s values and norms, as well as language. Multiculturalism promotes peace and harmony between cultures. It also promotes unique cultural differences and promotes respect for these differences, but at the same time multiculturalism leads to very few or no common values and norms. This can lead to societal fragmentation on a larger scale. Assimilationist policies lead to a shared language, making it easier for people from different cultures to communicate with each other, however, they also lead to a significant loss of culture for the immigrants.
