10 Steps to exam success
ARE YOU IN AN EXAM YEAR?

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO PREPARE FOR EXAMS?

TEN STEPS TO IMPROVE YOUR STUDY SKILLS AND EXAM RESULTS

Preparation:-

1) Divide the subject into exam sections e.g. in German for Higher Leaving Certificate the sections are Listening Comprehension, Reading Comprehension, General Themes and a Letter. The same approach can be made to any subject.
2) Pick a section and divide it into topics or parts for example Listening Comprehension is broken down into different conversations. Pick a conversation and make a list of all vocabulary from that part. Learn all vocabulary and practice proficiency by listening to CD over and over again until a satisfactory level is reached and all questions are answered comfortably. Another example of sub division is, for example in History pick a list of areas to be covered per topic such as causes, cures and consequences of World War 1. Sub Divide it again into more headings for example the roles of World Leaders involved in World War 1. Clarity and logic is very important here.
3) Go to exam papers and make a list of all questions on that topic.
4) Pick a question.

Practice:-

5) Set a goal to learn that answer within a manageable time frame. Write only for the duration of the exam time say 40 minutes. Check exam time per question if not sure.
6) Once learned sit down and write out the first draft of that answer. Keeping an eye on the time.
7) Go and ask your teacher to correct question or check books like Less Stress More Success to compare answers or go to examinations.ie where you will find the exam marking schemes for every subject and correct the question like an examiner.
8) Write Draft 2 using corrected information and and watching the time.
9) Proof read it again paying attention to grammar, spelling mistakes and keep writing and practicing until the draft is at acceptable level.

Review:-

10) File question away in your folder and review regularly.
