10 Things I Hate About You Movie Review

The 1999 film, 10 Things I Hate About You, mirrors many of the characters, themes, and conflicts as in the Shakespeare play, The Taming of the Shrew. The characters in the film involve Kat as Kate, Patrick as Petruchio, Cameron as Lucentio, Bianca as Bianca, Michael as Tranio, and Joey as a suitor for Bianca. The characters share many of the same motives as their counterparts in the play. The reasons for their motives all revolve around Mr. Stratford’s decision of not allowing Bianca to date until her sister, Kat, does; which is slightly different from the play where Bianca can not marry until her older sister Kate does. Kat however, has a bad reputation of being strong-willed and rude to the opposite sex. Both Cameron and Joey are interested in dating Bianca and so they decide to search for a boyfriend for Kat, in which case they find Patrick. Rich Joey bribes Patrick with money into dating Kat, so he can go after Bianca. Michael is the middle man who is helping Cameron date Bianca. Cameron tutors Bianca in French, similar to Lucentio’s tutoring of Bianca in the play, to be with her. Patrick similarly, is trying to do everything he can to get Kat to be interested enough in him to date. He even takes over the PA system at the soccer field where Kat is practicing soccer and pays the band to play while he dances and sings in the stands for her in front of everyone. His performance is goofy and outrageous, mirroring Petruchio’s buffoonery at the wedding. At the end of the movie Kat’s poem in front of the class is a teary, public declaration of her submission and love to Patrick. Kate’s speech at the end of the play is also a declaration of her submission to her husband, Petruchio. The two are tamed in the end, but for different reasons, Kat is tamed by her love for Patrick and Kate seems to be tamed more by her sense of duty as a wife. The movie was not stereotypical about the role of girls/women,

He does this because he knows his eldest is not, in any way, interested in dating during highschool as proven by the following quote: "Have you seen the unwashed miscreants that go to that school?". Katarina is basically a teenage rebel who doesn't want to do what anybody expects. Bianca, in "10 Things", is a cheerful but sometimes snotty sophmore that thinks her sister is the bane to her existance. Meanwhile, at school there is a new boy by the name of Cameron. Cameron sees Bianca while taking a tour through his new school, called Padua, and falls instantly in love. His new friend Michael warns him away from her telling him that she is shallow, conceited, and her father won't let her date until her older sister does. Cameron doesn't care and decides to find a way to make Bianca fall in love with him. He learns of her need for a french tutor and decides to take up tutoring her while looking for a person to date Kat.     The Taming of the Shrew was a Shakespearean play that was written between 1590 and 1592. Set in both Padua, and Verona, Italy, the play details the “love” story of Petruchio and Katherina. Shakespeare had written the play to be a comedic piece. In 1967 Franco Zeffirelli transformed The Taming of the Shrew into a movie. Maintaining the original story line and setting, Zeffirelli worked the relationship of actors Richard Burton, Petruchio, and Elizabeth Taylor, Katherina into the comedic movie. In 1999 the Shakespearean play was transformed again and directed by Gil Junger. Junger’s movie, 10 Things I Hate About You, is a modernized take on the original play. Changing Katherina to Kat, and Petruchio to Patrick, Junger immersed the movie in the popular culture ideals of the 1990’s. Interpretations of the texts differ from person to person, this opinions will be based upon an individuals beliefs and values.     Gil Junger communicates the idea that following the crowd can have negative consequences using visuals and sounds. This theme is expressed through the employment of camera angles and dialogue. With the introduction of the Stratford Sisters into the film the camera jukstaposes them. The juksta position between the two sisters offers the audience an insight into their attitude and lifestyle. This technique shows the audience that Kat (Katrina) “doesn’t give a damn about my reputation!” while her sister Bianca is portrayed as a spoilt and confident sophomore that cares about what she looks like and what everyone says of her “I love my sketches but I can’t live without my Prada backpack.” This quote communicates to the audience that Bianca is a foolish sophomore. Dialogue is another employed technique used in this film. Dialogue is used to show that “Popularity isn’t everything,” and that Kat does not care of what anyone thinks of her and follows what she thinks is right. At the party scene Kat gives up on what she believes is right and follows the crowd. As consequence of following the crowd Kat gets drunk and starts dancing on the table top, when Patrick confronts her she asks him “Isn’t getting drunk what we’re supposed to do at a party?” This quote reveals to the audience that Kat is following what the crowd is doing and does not care about what she believes in.     Also by following the plot of Shakespeare’s play: ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ the audience experience an unstructured story with types of characters that are not usually featured as main roles within Romantic Comedies as Kat (Julia Styles) is uninterested in dating boys or finding love, she is opposed to traditionally girly stereotypes and appears individual and intelligent and has no care about what people think of her, a complete contrast to her younger superficial sister, Larissa, who seems to embrace every stereotypical characteristic possible, her character enlightens the audience to the usual depiction of teenage girls within Romantic Comedies. Although we see Kat with her wall up she eventually toward the end of the film she shows she has reached as she admits does love Patrick (Heath Ledger), and here achieves happiness again however this is only with the aid of a man (Patrick), who simply apologised and buys Kat a guitar to be forgiven which gives an impression that although Kat seems quite alternative and a unstereotypical character she is still shown to be materialistic.     The Outsiders did not fit the criteria of being one of the films of Francis Ford Coppola. Critics were largely unimpressed by the movie but did well enough at the box office.     The differing roles of men and women of the time are apparent to those of the Elizabethan times. After Katherina and Petruchio's marriage, Petruchio instantly dominates the household despite Katherina's behaviour. Petruchio speaks of instructing her like a "falcon" and plans to "kill a wife with kindness". Katherina is forced to follow Petruchio's every order, not only because she is his wife, but also because of the role in which females were constrained to fulfil. However, by the end of the play, Katherina delivers a long speech of her husband's role and her appreciation: "Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper, Thy head, thy sovereign, one that cares for thee... My hand is ready, may it do him ease" (Act 5, scene 2). Although throughout, Katherina does not play the traditional female role, in the end, she surrenders and accepts the conventions of her society. On the other hand, in "Ten things I hate about you", it is evident that Kat does not follow the traditional female role. Alongside with favouring "angry girl music", she expresses herself in a classroom saying: "oppressive, patriarchal values which dictate our education." In saying this, she is referring to gender roles, in particular the male and the way she feels repressed by her father. Kat is a feminist who has very strong opinions and values.
