10 Years of Undemocratic Democracy Nigeria
MAY 29 1999. Gen Abdulsalam Abubakar handed over power to an elected civilian leader Olusegun Obasanjo who was also a former military leader of the country. And in 2009 29th may, the country has witnessed it civilian to civilian transfer of power when Obasanjo had to hand over power to the incumbent president umaru yaradua when his tenure elongation plans failed to materialize.

the term nascent is till synonymous with the usage of democracy in Nigeria Despite 10 years of democracy in Nigeria. may be that is the reason for the high rate of undemocratic dividends in the country.
29th may 2009 mark a decade anniversary of democracy in Nigeria. What have we benefited from this concept when compared to other countries practicing this concept of government of the people, by the people and for the people?

Nigerian democratic regime is shadowed with much of the so-called problems associated with military rule. The military regime is popularly believed to be very corrupt, characterized with high rate of killings, nepotism and other forms of social and anti developmental vices (It confuses me on the prefer choice of leadership).

Despite the change of nomenclature from NEPA to PHCN, the situation of power generation in the country is very critical with every house using “I pass my neighbour” as a source of steady power supply. Little wonder the increase rate of global warming.

During this 10 years period, the country was rated the 3rd most corrupt country in the world despite the presence of EFCC and ICPC {anti corruption commissions). This evil maniac has been institutionalized in Nigerian and even beyond the shores of the country by Nigerians. The open battle between former president Olusegun Obasanjo and his vice Atiku over PTDF funds is not new. The arrest and the commando style escape of former Bayelsa state governor Depriye Alameseigha coupled with international embarrassment Joshua Dariye, Bode George, Tafa Balogun and Femi Fani kayode brought upon the good

Nigeria as a nation has been very unfortunate since independence to have leaders who lack the basic quality of good leadership with which the nation would have been transformed into a powerful and vibrant nation. This has resulted to the fact that Nigeria, within her very short period of existence as a sovereign nation, has witnessed quite a number of coup-d-tat, which is a direct product of bad leadership. This phenomenon of leadership style inherent in our sovereign nation runs across different spheres of endeavours. It is not uncommon then in Nigeria for various categories of workers and students to embark on strike actions or mass protest to demonstrate their disenchantment with…

Nigeria has been stigmatized by the international community as the second most corrupt country in the world. For three consecutive-years, 2000. 2001 and 2002, it has maintained that unenviable position. The rating came up as a consequence of several failed attempts in the past to wipe out corruption or reduce it to a tolerable level in the polity. From the Jaji Declaration in 1977 by Olusegun Obasanjo; the…

Nigeria has been ruled by military regimes for almost 30 of its 50 years of independence, with several coups and counter-coups. The putative democracy at independence in 1960 lasted only until 1966 when the first military coup took place. The military retained power from 1966 until 1979, but this was not a period of stability or peace. The Biafra secessionist war lasted from 1967 to 1970 and claimed more than one million lives through violence, starvation, and disease. This war of secession was led by the Igbo (of southeastern Nigeria, including the Delta) due to economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions. While not at the root of the attempted secession, the prospect of oil wealth (or the prospect of losing it, as seen from the federal government viewpoint) exacerbated the conflict.…

Nigeria is known for its strong military presence within the government. The degree of militarism in Nigeria is high because of their past history being under civilian rule. During the first forty years of Nigeria’s independence, this state only lasted ten years under a civilian government. A few years after the downfall of their civilian government, they soon fell under military rule. Nigeria has always been considered stronger and more power when they were controlled by their government, rather than following a democracy[2]; this exemplifies militarism. Although in Nigeria they tend to use their military to create a corruption within politics, other countries use their militaries for difference purposes.…

Nigeria has been seen as a corrupt country much like other third world countries left to fend for themselves after the onslaught of colonialism. The systems put in place by colonialism keep the country from progressing in any meaningful way once they attain independence. Another problem not addressed in the article is the backlog of the criminal justice system. It was so bad that the government resorted to periodic amnesties just to reduce the inmate population. There have been others fghting against the corruption such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the fight continues.…

Regardless of nomenclature, local government is a creation of British colonial rule in Nigeria. It has overtime experienced change in name, structure and composition. Between 1930s and 1940s, for instance, local government was known as chief-in-council and chief-and-council, where traditional rulers were given pride of place in the scheme of things. In the 1950s, election was introduced according to the British model in the western and eastern parts of the country with some measure of autonomy in personnel, financial and general administration (Nwabueze, 1982:20-21). It was on this premise that the rising tide of progress, growth and development experienced in the local governments in these areas was based. The pace of this development was more noticeable in the south than in the north.…

In the contemporary world of today, elections have become the most accepted means of changing the government. Although history has shown that it is usually difficult to hold elections that are free and fair. But the importance of a good electoral act cannot be underestimated especially in a developing country like Nigeria where elections were reported to be marred by irregularities by foreign and local observers. It is on this basis that this paper critically observed, even with the electoral reforms carried out, the reasons why there were violence after the 2011 general election and recommended that adopting the basic part of the reforms, devolvement of power at the centre are other plausible way forward to true and sustainable democratic system in Nigeria.…

However, despite the doubts and skepticisms openly expressed by scholars, Nigeria, like several other African countries, became democratic. On May 29, 1999 Nigeria became a 'democratic ' state. Prior to 1999 political transition, Nigeria was under firm military autocracy and absolutism for close to 29 years (since 1966), when the military made their first incursion into Nigeria 's government and politics, following the collapse of the first republic5. It is vital to note that authoritarian governments were interrupted only by a brief period of civilian rule in the Second Republic…
