100 Mile Diet Research Paper
The 100-mile diet is a great concept where you consume food that is grown and produced in a one-hundred-mile radius from your house. The perks of this diet are clear: you know what’s being put into your food, you aren’t producing as much fossil fuel waste, you have open communication with farmers, you’re supporting the local farming industry. However, this diet is much easier said than done—especially in Shanghai.
The 100-mile diet is very popular in America where people care about what they are eating. That isn’t the case in Shanghai. One of the biggest struggles when it comes to the 100-mile diet in Shanghai is actually knowing truthfully where your food is coming from. In a region of the world, like America, where there is more transparency regarding food, it’s much more doable. If one were to live by the 100-mile diet here, eating would become a chore and it would require a lot of work and patience. Clearly, China is a massive urban city. Yet, the 100-mile diet states that the food must be produced/grown within a hundred-mile radius from your house. The city of Shanghai doesn’t have much nearby farmland. Shanghai and it’s surrounding area is an urban cityscape. This makes finding local food almost impossible. Also, Shanghai is relatively costal; therefore, a portion of the 100-mile radius is lost to the ocean. A large issue is that most food for Shanghai is outsourced. The local fruit stand guy could get his oranges from Yunnan, apples from An Hui, and peppers from Si Chuan, but we just don’t know.
Shanghai is a first world city in a third world country and this makes living by a first world diet very improbable. The ultimate demise of the 100-mile diet in Shanghai is the mass uncertainty regarding food production. While I think that the 100-mile diet accomplishes awareness for what one is eating, decreasing fossil fuel emissions, and working towards sustainability, it’s a diet for the rich and fortunate who can afford to pay higher prices for food.
