Figurative Language:
“His dreams ended as he faced that shen,foamy,dirty sea, which had no merited the risks and sacrifices of the adventure” (Marquez 12)
Here in this line Jose Arcadio Buendia finds the sea and its not what he wants to find. His thoughts are poisoned and clouded as we can see this when the author describes the sea as being dirty. Water represents the mind and the subconscious so when water is presented that its dirty or polluted this could mean that the characters mind is corrupted. This could've happened when Jose becomes intrigued with the gypsies especially Melquiades, the book tells a time before Jose had all these ideas and didn’t isolate himself from his family and others up until he meets Melquiades. Now this won’t be the first time that dreams end as they end later when the whole town becomes insomniacs, since they can’t sleep they can’t dream. But here we can see that the dreams ended because of disappointment, all that work and build up to find something unexpected and Jose realizes that it wasn’t worth it.
