The topic of the meeting was about substance abuse and addiction. I was having diverse expectations from this meeting. It surpassed a hefty portion of my expectations; nonetheless it demolished others and left me somewhat dumbfounded. My imagination painted a photo in my brain of what a 12-step meeting would resemble. It depicted a room loaded with individuals that clearly looked like addicts; unkempt appearances, marginal hostile cleanliness, and no less than one individual transmitting a brilliance of booze while swaying forward and backward in his chair, adjusting at stake between …show more content…
Knowing my enthusiasm for learning, he educated me around a 12-step meeting focused to youthful addicts (under 30). From this meeting, I likewise have came to know that individuals who have found a social group or association to be painful or destructive in the past may observe this is to be an extraordinary chance to mend from these encounters. Numerous have utilized the group as an approach to make more positive encounters and have profited from the chance to feel esteemed, acknowledged, and accepted by others. Group members as often as possible report an expanded feeling of comprehension and acknowledgment, and find that other group members can frequently identify with them about concerns they felt were particularly their own. I additionally have learned that group therapy is not just a chance to get criticism and exhortation; it is likewise a chance to connect and bolster others. What is talked about inside our therapy sessions is done as such in certainty. Addressing individuals who are experiencing comparative issues to our self likewise helps us to feel less secluded and accordingly more …show more content…
Nobody assaulted me with his or her religious trademarks, nobody annoyed me to clasp hands and supplicate, and nobody minded in the event that I sat in the back or sat in the front, drank espresso or didn't drink espresso. There appeared to be no set standards other than those of basic admiration which may incorporate; try to be on time no smoking and no cross talk amid shares. To the extent running into individuals who might remember me? All things considered, that happened however it was no major ordeal. Without a doubt not the major ordeal I utilized as a reason for a considerable length of time earlier for not going to a meeting. The component of 'story sharing' appeared to be entirely convincing and maybe the best a portion of this meeting. In listening to others' stories, members have found that individuals have comparable issues and encounters. New members can likely see that balance (over a drawn out stretch of time) is workable for some and have some trust. So, the members of this meeting additionally talked about the colossal harm substance abuse has added to their lives – harm which they would have jumped at the chance to have kept away from. Notwithstanding this, members voiced a powerful urge to stop drinking however were not able keep up temperance at different focuses in their lives. This appears to

There are many different types of therapies that are available to help individuals struggling with addiction; group counseling is one of these. Many studies show that individuals may benefit from attending group therapy or group counseling. However, it is not something that everyone will benefit from. This paper is focused on discussing my personal experience while attending a local Narcotics Anonymous meeting. I knew going into this meeting that I had to go with an open mind, an open heart, and a complete respect for those around me. I understood that all meetings are unique in their own way and that their formats may not be similar to that of a neighboring location. From my research it seems it follows the same precursors as what you would exercise if you were looking for a good marriage counselor, you keep looking until you find the right one that works for you. I found it quite interesting and very welcoming that they allow anyone to attend these meetings, and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little nervous. This feeling of nervousness actually put me into a similar mindset that I believe, without lessening their struggles, an addict might be experiencing their first time attending.…

After reading a chapter from the Big Book, the meeting was opened up for sharing. There was no cross talk and I did not hear any gruesome war stories of what happened when people hit rock bottom. Instead, I heard stories of how grateful people were to have the rooms and meetings in their lives. They realized that their lives had become unmanageable and AA had saved them. The Big Book was used as a source of inspiration and guidance and is not meant to shame anyone.…

I was a little nervous attending one of these meetings because I didn’t know what to expect but only know from television shows and movies. What is the reality though? I imagined and painted a picture of what an AA meeting would be like. I pictured a room full of people that were obvious addicts, unkept appearances, offensive hygiene and at least one person smelling of alcohol while moving back and forth in the chair. As I entered the room, my perspective laughed at me and as I looked around I was deceived. It was the complete opposite, most of the members of the group were clean, well-kept and looked healthy. I have never been a room full of worried people trying to stay sober because they started the road to sobriety. To keep their…
