During the winter of 1788, riots took place at different parts of france. The weather was very cold, followed by flooding. Summer hail storms had caused drought. This caused bad harvest. The price of bread loaf increased for this reason.

The estates general was a group that represented all different states of france- First, second and third. This meeting was held when the king wanted to agree to new taxes. Necker, director general of france, advised the king that he should double the people in third estate.

The middle class and peasants wanted bigger changes. The peasants and bourgeois were frustrated. The national assembly that wasn’t approved by the king, really wanted to make progress with the constitution. All of this sparked them to finally take a stand for themselves. Also, fears in Paris were increasing that the king would get rid of the national assembly. Finally, a crowd of 8000 people marched and broke into the building Invalides. They took weapons from there and further marched on to the fortress of Bastille. This was a prison. It was a symbol of the king and his government. France declared war in Austria and there was a shortage of food in France. The Australian duke invaded France. There was a lot of fear going around and many prisoners were suspected for being with the Austrians. Around 1000 of them were killed.

King Louis XVI and his family were in prison. He escaped from there on 20 june 1791 but got caught. He was found guilty. ‘Louis Capet’ (Louis XVI) was executed on ‘Place de la revolution’. People even tasted his blood.
