The War of 1812 is one of the most complex wars of the United States. The war lasted for over two years, and while it ended as it had started, in stalemate, it was in fact a war that once and for all confirmed American Independence. The United States declared War on Great Britain on June 12, 1812. The war was declared as a result of long simmering disputes with Great Britian. The central dispute was based on the impressing of American soldiers by the British. The British had previously attacked the USS Chesapeake and nearly caused a war two year earlier (Horsman, 1-4). In addition, disputes continued with Great Britain over the Northwest Territories and the border with Canada. Finally, the attempt of Great Britain to impose a blockade on France during the Napoleonic Wars was a constant source of conflict with the United States (Boorstin-Kelly, 198-200).…

The exchange between British ship “Leopard” and American frigate “Chesapeake” in 1807 prompted Jefferson to order all British ships out of American water and prohibited foreign ships from the American export trade. The effect of this self imposed embargo would have a disastrous effect on the American economy sending it into a depression in 1808. Napoleon took advantage of this flawed policy and claimed the right to attack American ships in any continental port because, by Jefferson’s own order they were illegal carriers and in violation of the embargo.…

The United Stated was very aware that declaring war on Britain would bring a great burden to the US economy. Interestingly, the United Stated had advised and denounced Great Britain on several occasions about their offences to Americans. The United Sates’ government did not take this approach with the Native Tribes that were in dispute with the United States. The American government had established some treaties with Native tribes by the beginnings of the 1800’s. The government would ignore such treaties or making such treaties have little benefits to the tribes.…

British aggressions were forces that led Americans to declare war on Britain in 1812. Document 1 is the first to show this. Document 1 expresses that Britain seized US ships and sailors because they didn’t acknowledged the US of having the right to use the ocean for commerce. The purpose of this document was to express unhappiness against British aggressions on the US. This document shows that British aggressions on the Americans merchants was a factor because it foreshadows the war due to the fact that British aggressions/impressments were getting worst despite the US “complaints and protests” against Britain. The US tried peacefully to avoid war and to get their grievances addressed by making Jay’s Treaty with Britain. Jay’s Treaty was made to convince Britain to pay damages for seizures of American ships and to return US sailors, but Britain refused to do so. Britain continued to seize US ships and sailors and became more hostile to the US. This shows that British aggressions was a force that led to the declaration of war because the US wanted to prevent war but Britain seemed to want war with the US with their aggressions in the sea.…

The bargaining position of America was weak. According to Document D, all the U.S. could do was to “respectfully” ask Great Britain to lower its trade restrictions with the U.S. Because the U.S. Was expanding westward, navigations along the Mississippi became increasingly important to the economic well being of the U.S. Again the U.S. bargaining position, this time with Spain, was weak because the U.S. could not secure a treaty in total accordance with its economic stance and this treaty “would be limited” to a certain length of time.…

Feelings of patriotism and a sense of pride arose after the War of 1812. As America fought its Second War of Independence, it set itself on a path to industrial power and regained its sense of nationalism. Regional economies in the country lead to differences between the North and the South. The industrial revolution, which had begun in Britain, lead to the prosperity of manufactured goods, and with Jefferson’s Embargo Act of 1807 and Slater’s invention of the Spinning Jenny, goods were starting to be manufactured in America itself. While cash crops did not sell well in the North, the northerners turned towards industrial goods, while in the South, the cotton gin was booming, thus expanding slavery in the south, as well as cotton production. This…

Despite the inter-quarreling of his party, Jefferson was able to maintain a degree of control over Congress. Former Vice President Aaron Burr came back to haunt Jefferson again when he was believed to be attempting a revolution in the West, which Jefferson was able to squash. Britain and partly France had been interrupting America’s neutral trade rights. Frustrated with this and the havoc of the Napoleonic wars, Jefferson proposed an embargo of all American sea trade, and in 1807, Congress authorized it. The embargo served as a way to economically drive both France and Britain to respect the United States.…

When the Napoleonic wars began, both Britain and France tried to stop the United States from trading with the other. In 1806, the French established the Continental System, which stopped British trade in Europe. In 1807,…
