English Language in Eighteenth Century
Background. The first half of eighteen century is commonly designated in histories of literature the Augustan Age in England. During the half-century preceding, the principal characteristics of this period may be seen taking form, and in the fifty years following. They are still clearly visible, however mixed with new tendencies foreign to it. One of the first of these characteristics to be mentioned is a strong sense of order and the value of regulation.
