During the Great depression of 1930s most Americans citizen were at their lowest. People were in poverty, bankrupt, homeless, By 1930, 4 million Americans looking for work could not find
it that number had risen to 6 million in less than a year, more and more people became homeless , in 1930 banking panics began, people force banks to give them their money back, many banks became closed. There was no money to buy food so families would eat their pets, or would take turns eating each night. They could not afford heat in the winter so the had to burn their wooden chairs (Document 2). It got so bad that over the next several years, consumer spending and investment dropped, causing steep declines in industrial output and rising levels of unemployment as failing companies laid off workers. To make matters worst farmers were faced with bad weather and drought conditions that led to the Dust Bowl. Many people tried to grow their foods but couldn’t because the Dust Bowl made farming hard.
Although this was a time of hardship the people America still had to come together as one nation. We made soup kitchens, this soup kitchens were usually run by churches or charity organizations, and they that provides free or extremely low priced food for unemployed or homeless people (Doc 3). People mostly farmers had to eat fruits and vegetable before they were even ripped. (Doc 2). Since the government voted to give the people bonus money, people would They needed their money now. They built a shacktown on the edge of Washington, because they wanted their money now The way the government held this crisis was very different and unique. President Hoover thought that it was the local government fault and that they should take responsibility for it (Doc 1). Government fired women and give jobs to the the “head” of the household (Doc 5). One of the most efficient strategies that was used by the government were the three R’s (Relief, Recovery, Reform,). In other words the New Deal. He was going to provide federal payment to the unemployed people so that they would be able to buy things like food and shelter. Then he created programs that were designed to put Americas back to work. One of the keys pieces to this was the WPA which was created to put people to work building briges, roads, etc. And the social security which was created for old people have money after retirement, this encouraged old people to retire and give young people opportunities to get jobs. Finally the government created a package of legislation that was designed to stabilize the Americans economy. Although these were all good ideas and did help stabilize the economy somewhat, America was still in the great depression. It was not until America entered World War II that unemployment rate went down, people got some money in there pocket, banks reopened, and America finally got out of the Great Depression. Everyone body was working again. People were building ships, weapons, airplanes, and doing all they could to helping with the war. If were job searching on Dec 21 you got a job Dec 22. Everything was in sync and we were finally able to close this terrible chapter of our history. America has been in very harsh time since their creation, but The Great Depression was by far one of the worst. People were out of jobs, unemployment rate shot up, a lot of people were broke. Some even had to eat their pets. But with the election of President Roosevelt and the entrance of World War II, America was dragged out of the Great Depression.
