1941: Germany and Italy declare war on US
Germany and Italy have announced they are at war with the United States. America immediately responded by declaring war on the two Axis powers.
Three days ago, US President Franklin Roosevelt announced America was at war with Japan, the third Axis power, following the surprise attack on its naval base at Pearl Harbor.

Today Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini, made his declaration first - from the balcony over the Piazza Venezia in Rome - pledging the "powers of the pact of steel" were determined to win.

Then Adolf Hitler made his announcement at the Reichstag in Berlin saying he had tried to avoid direct conflict with the US but, under the Tripartite Agreement signed on 27 September 1940, Germany was obliged to join with Italy to defend its ally Japan.

"After victory has been achieved," he said. "Germany, Italy and Japan will continue in closest co-operation with a view to establishing a new and just order."

He accused President Roosevelt of waging a campaign against Germany since 1937, blamed him for the outbreak of war in 1939 and said he was planning to invade Germany in 1943.

Over in Washington, President Roosevelt told Congress the free world must act quickly and decisively against the enemy.

"The forces endeavouring to enslave the entire world now are moving towards this hemisphere.

"Delay invites danger. Rapid and united efforts by all peoples of the world who are determined to remain free will ensure world victory for the forces of justice and righteousness over the forces of savagery and barbarism."

Resolutions against Germany and Italy were passed without debate. The only person who did not vote for war was pacifist Congresswoman Jeannette Rankin who had also voted against war with Japan.

In the Senate the vote was unanimous.

Both Democrats and Republicans have agreed to "adjourn politics" for the duration of the war and focus on national defence.

They have passed a new law which

    1. Why did Hitler declare war on the United States in 1941? Hitler declared war against the United States on December 11th of 1941, just a few days after the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7th. I think the basis upon which Hitler declared war was his signing of Tripartite Pact towards the end of September of 1940. The pact was signed by Germany, Japan, and Italy, along with some other smaller eastern European states, and was aimed at bring the signatories, who seemingly had aligned interests, into a closer defensive alliance.…

The speech can be parted in to three segments. The first one being an informative description of the situation. When in 1939 war did break out between Germany on the one hand, and Britain and France on the other President Franklin D. Roosevelt dutifully invoked the Neutrality Acts. However, he believed that this was a fundamentally different war from World War I. Germany, he believed and most Americans agreed with him was in this case a clear aggressor. Roosevelt therefore sought to provide assistance for the Allies, while still keeping the United States out of the war. He began by asking Congress to amend the neutrality laws to allow arms sales to the Allies. Later on, after German forces overran France, the president asked Congress for a massive program of direct military aid to Great Britain an initiative that Roosevelt dubbed Lend-Lease." In both cases the legislature agreed to FDR's proposals, but only after intense debate.…

Since the attack on Pearl Harbor was an act of terrorism and endangered our soldiers. It was not difficult to appeal to the people’s emotion and convince Congress to issue a state of war against Japan. Seeing as it took not even an hour, but 33 minutes after Roosevelt delivered the speech for Congress to declare war on Japan. Moreover, being the President of the United States also establishes his credibility and a figure to believe amongst the people of America as well as announcing that as “Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us.”. Further proclaiming his authority.…

Throughout the war America slightly got more involved in the war. For example the Lend-Lease act was passed during World War II which stated that military manpower and supplies could be sold, leased, transferred, or exchanged to any country whose defense would be vital to the protection of the U.S. After keeping neutral for the longest time, Japan was about to change that. On December 7, 1941 Japan planned an attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The attack was so effective due to the fact that all the boats were lined up and planes were in a row out of hangers because there was an inspection coming. Admiral Yamamoto, their greatest military leader, knew that it would be a bad idea to attack America and would start a war that Japan could not win.…

When WWII first began in 1939, the United States was hesitant to get involved. During this time, many Americans were Isolationists, believing the United States should refrain from intervening with international conflicts. Isolationism led to the passing of the Neutrality Acts, which outlawed the sale or loan of arms to nations at war. However, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, it was clear the American Isolationist debate was over. Not long after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States was at war with the Axis Powers, made up of Germany, Italy, and Japan. To contribute to the war effort, Americans changed their lives economically, politically, and socially.…

These shows of strength were obviously convened to impress the Italian leader, and it worked. Two months after, Italy joined Germany and Japan in the Anti-Comintern Pact: an agreement to resist the expansion of the Soviet Union and prevent the spread of communism. Hitler’s influence on Mussolini became evident in the Italian leader’s Manifesto of Race (July 1938). This decree, which proved very unpopular in Italy, stripped Italian Jews of their citizenship and removed them from government occupations. In September 1938 Mussolini was part of the four-nation summit on the Czechoslovakian crisis and a signatory of the Munich…
